I wonder what went through Aly Wagner's head as she put on a uniform with number 10 on it. Wearing Akers' number has to impress a player with a huge sense of responsibility.
From the Women's Cup roster, it seems there was no number 3 or 7. I know Pearce usually wears 3 and Whalen used to wear 7. Who wears those now?

If I am not mistaken Jena Kleugel normally wears 7. However for some reason she was left off the roster for this tournament. As far as 3 I'm not sure about who normally wears that one.

true but i think that aly deserves to wear the great #10 cuz shes a great player herself. i think she'll fill in Akers shoes as best as anyone could.

I'm not saying she doesn't deserve to wear it. Brazilians have worn 10 since Pele and Argentines have worn 10 since Maradona. Americans will wear 10 after Akers. I hope Wagner plays up to the number (though I think it would be unfair to expect her to be as great a player as Akers).

I'm pretty sure the last one to wear #3 was Jenny Benson.

I think Aly will wear the number with pride. Shes got along way ahead of herself and with the way shes playing now, she will own up to that #.
Pearce is normally #3. However, a few different players have worn it since her ACL injury, none that have stuck with it. If she returns to the NT for a game or so, she will be rewarded her # back.
Kluegal & Fair wore #7, Kluegal wearing it more times though. Fair wore it for one game and I remember thinking, what the hell is she doing??? I dont know what inspired her with that # or what, but it was crazy.

because 3 and 7 considered as unlucky numbers.

in USWNT everything has no real meaning, just as every one can be team's capt (i've seen Lily, T Robert, Milly, Mia, mc Millan, Scury, Fawcett, Parlow as team's capt beside the real capt: Foudy & Carla) so as the number, actualy number is very important that explains what is the player's main duty, just like no.1 always a keeper's and 10 is a playmaker, lower numbers are deffenders etc etc

the reason different players have been team captian is b/c it was their 100th game. Parlow was #3 during the 96 olympics, but she didn't like the number so when 12 was open she took that #.

actually, while some of the players have gotten to pick their numbers, alot of players (especially those who arent mainstays) get whatever numbers are left. I remember reading something (I think it was in All American Girls) where Millie talks about how she had to take 16 cause Vench already had 15, which is her favorite number (she has it w/ the Power). Also, a few of the other ones in the book said their number had no real significance, it was just the only one available when they started their WNT careers. lemme see if I can dig up the book and I'll post everyone's reasoning behind their #s.

ok, found it.
Akers-She's worn the number 10 since college. Historically, coaches reserve the number 10 for elite players like Pele and Michelle Akers.
Chastain-Number 6-no significance.
Fair-Jersey number 2 has no significance.
Fawcett-The number 5 has always been the Biefeld family's soccer jersey number. Everyone wore it. When Joy joined the WNT, 5 was taken, so she chose 14. When 5 became available again, she didn't want it. Joy explains, "I had too much good luck with 14 by then."
Foudy-She has worn number 11 since club soccer. Why 11? "When I was little, I always wanted to be number one until I figured out that eleven was two number ones--even better!"
Hamm-When she joined the WNT in 1987, Mia was the youngest player picked, therefore she received the only number remaining, 9.
Lilly-The number 13 had no special significance when she was assigned it--now she loves it.
Mac-When she joined the WNT, the number 8 was the only available number. That was okay. "Eight was my very first jersey number. I think that's pretty cool."
Millie-In high school and college her favorite number was 15. When she joined the WNT, 15 was taken, so Tiffeny took number 16.
Overbeck-The number 4 was assigned to her when she joined the team.
Parlow-She wore number 3 during the Olympics, then switched to number 12 after Carin Gabarra retired. "I just didn't think three was a forward's number. Don't ask me why, I just didn't."
TR-Says Tiffany, "I've worn the number five forever. My birthday is five/five. I love fives."
Scurry-Traditionally, a team's number one goalkeeperr wears the number 1, Briana Scurry's number.
Venturini-Tisha wore number 13 through college, but when she joined the WNT, 13 was taken by Kristine Lilly. When Wendy Gebauer retired, Tisha took number 15.

Technicaly, Foudy supposed to have no.10 after Akers retired but, maybe since the soccer fans and especialy her fans ( has connection w/ celebrity status ) has already been familiar w/ her number now and she might as well stick w/ it, for example people knows Mia as the one and only no. 9 owner. but, I think no.10 is the only number in soccer that changes the owner from time to time and has its own quality standard.

i remember when cramer wore #10 for a while and she was awesome. i guess its got some meaning to it. since all the vets of the nats are saying that aly wags will be the next US superstar i guess its only fair to let her wear the #10.

There was an article awhile back saying she wanted a normal life, and did "retire". Suprising to me but none of us know what the NT life is, so theres no real way to judge her life. She was great though.

she has just started her career w/ nat team ( i think she hasn't even had full 90 min yet except w/ U-19) and retired already?

that's good news, it means she might be back someday and still be in her prime since she was only 17 when she retired.

Cramer said she quit the U.S. Women's National Team after finishing its tour to China.
------------
Cramer said she hadn't considered quitting the team until she was in China. "I just had this feeling that this isn't what you are supposed to be doing right now," she said.
Cramer told April Heinrichs, coach of the U.S. Women's National Team, about her decision and said Heinrichs, team captain Julie Foudy and teammate Brandy Chastain were supportive and happy for her.
