From Soccer America

Telecasts of the last two U.S. qualifiers against Mexico and Guatemala drew much better ratings than the 0.2 (142,200 households) produced Feb. 9 when the Americans beat Trinidad & Tobago, 2-1, in Port of Spain.

On Easter Sunday, the Mexico-U.S. game generated a 0.7 rating (630,200 households). Three days later, U.S.-Guatemala drew a 0.8 (679,400). All of the qualifiers were televised on ESPN2, and the Mexico-U.S. game was preceded by a special edition of "Outside the Lines" on ESPN.

How does that compare to other cable television ratings or MLS matches on ESPN 2?

any idea of the telemundo audience for mexico-usa??

I believe the final rating was a 9.8 on Telemundo if I am reading this correctly

How does that compare to other cable television ratings or MLS matches on ESPN 2?

The Chivas DC United match on ESPN drew a .4

The entire 2004 MLS ESPN2 schedule averaged a .2

not even a million households...

Sure it was.

You need to add both the Telemundo and ESPN2 numbers. which would total ~1.7 million households watched the game

10.7 million.

Are you sure? The ratings web site I linked seems to indicate otherwise (unless I am reading it wrong).

Remember that a 9.8 is a hispanic rating, NOT a national rating. A 9.8 hispanic rating relates to roughly a million households.

There were some huge numbers for the US-Mexico game here in Los Angeles. Especially on the Spanish broadcast. Even the mid-week DC United-Pumas game drew as many fans as the Laker game did. (Guess people are tired of Kobe's act)

I wasn't aware of that and I think you may be right. The 1047 next to the rating in the HH column would be in 1000's, which would be about a million.

Mea Culpa.

Comparing soccer ratings and numbers of viewers with other sports is like comparing apples and oranges.

Soccer is usually carried on CABLE CHANNELS so the millions that watch crap like baseball on regular TV couldnt watch soccer even if they wanted to. The question perhaps should be, what percentage of the Cable Audience actually watched? (maybe the ratings already takes that into account?).

Another point - when it comes to certain big soccer matches the ACTUAL audience watching is way higher than that reported - many a time have I gone to watch a game with a whole group of fanatics at a house or venue which had the appropriate feed.

When is the last time you've seen a non playoff baseball game on "regular" national TV??

Every Saturday during the season. If you count FOX as a "regular" network.
This year's schedule starts in May and runs weekly through September.

sounds good to me. Looks like some people were curious as to what was going on after the big deal everyone made about mexico. Hopefully that'll MLS and other USNT games.

The Latino household number is probably undercounted but is irrelevant for the advertising purposes anyway.

BTW, from what I recall, the Spanish language stations like KMEX-34 in LA charge ad rates at about 30-35% clip of what the English language stations charge for the same demos, so ESPN2 can probably get as much for its ~ 700,000 households as Telemundo can get for ~ 2M.

What the hell ever happened to ABC showing US Qualifiers???

If I recall a few years ago they showed a friendly with Germany pre-2002 WC, and they used to show the matches against Mexico on ABC.

The NCAA tournament started at around the 2nd half of the US-Mex game, and what was ABC showing? Cartoons? Easter services?

Everyone who has ESPN2 will have ABC. There is not a vice-versa.

For crap's sake, we can't even get ESPN????

If all I had were bunny ears I would not have been able to see the match.

It's one thing not to show US-Costa Rica or US-Guatemala on ABC, but for crap's sake it's Mexico.

What was the audience share? (i.e., the % of homes, with TVs turned on. that were watching) Also, on Easter Sunday many families (including my own) gather for dinner at one location. Others dine at restaurants.
