Hey all. I dragged a friend of mine to the Chivas-DC game, and he wrote up a little review for the LA Weekly....

The TGI Friday reference is extremely accurate. I had to strongly resist the urge to order a platter of ribs and side of onion rings....

Excellent article.

Dog?

And I enjoyed the article on atheism as well. That always surprises me - I mean, why risk it?

not to take this off topic, but well, I guess I am...

Why risk it? why not risk it? If you don't believe, what possible benefit do you get from going through the motions of a religion? If it turns out that there really was a God after all, he'd know you were a fraud anyway. Why waste time trying to get in the good graces of someone you don't think exists, and who will damn you to perdition for being a liar even if you pretend to conform?

Indeed. This argument ("If you believe, and you're wrong, you haven't lost anything; if you don't believe, and you're wrong, you're in big trouble") is just a restatement of Pascal's Wager. Long ago, when Usenet didn't suck, I read a fantastic post on Pascal's Wager that did especially well at pointing out how horrifying its argument in favor of belief should be to believers:

In my view, Pascal's Wager . . .marks the lowest point of western religious philosophy, winning out over many notable candidates for that distinction . . .

In reducing (belief) to some sort of small-minded greed-inspired accounting practice, the wager trivializes, indeed repudiates, thousands of years of philosophy and theology at a stroke. Shall wrestling with truth be reduced to consideration of an insurance salesman's pitch? Is the believer's "credo" no more than putting a bit of spare change with the most persuasive eternal-life investment broker? Is it possible to conceive of a more debased epistemology?

Theists should be especially aghast, since the wager undercuts both the putative majesty and goodness of God and the supposedly exalted nature of man, invested by God with intellectual and moral discernment. How petty the God who could value a "belief" deriving from such considerations! How spiritually impoverished the man who could offer such a belief to his God, imagining it to be worthy in His sight!

I was just joking there, but thanks for the lecture.

Next time I'll remember the smiley face.

Damnit, that TGI Friday's line is classic. Gotta wonder, were you guys asking people if they had the minimum amount of flair on?

The team certainly had less than the minimum amount of flair...

Imagine George Steinbrenner buying his way into Japanese baseball with a team named the Japanese Yankees. Same deal

That's about as well done as you can do it.

But wouldn't George also have to commit to only hiring people from the US or Canada for the analogy to work?

I liked this line...

Near the end of the game, I witnessed something quite surprising. The crowd started a spontaneous chant of “Chivas USA!” But the emphasis wasn’t on the “Chivas.” It was on the “USA.”

that and the reportedly excellent vibes from the Pumas supporters is very heartening. It will make it much easier to root for Chivas USA against New York.

That Chivas USA chant with the emphasis on USA ...

Didn't hear it. Never. Not at all.

In fact, I never once heard Chivas USA chanted. It was just CHEE -- VAS, CHEE -- VAS. Over and over and over and over ...

Maybe the 'USA' part was in one of those high frequencies only dogs and trained correspondents can hear. :)

I didn't hear that, either. I guess Dog did. It was pretty loud up until the second goal.
