I love this game, but I am absolute crap at free kicks (I'm on the PS2) in WE8. Even with skilled players, I have difficulty hitting a hard, curling shot on goal. I've practiced and done the skills training, but I think I'm still a little confused on the controls.
I played with the up and down far angle in 6 and 7, but this year I'm going side to side. Say I have a free kick on the left side of the box from 25 yards away, in a position perfect for a right footed kicker.
I want to fill the shoot meter up about half way or so, and press down left to curl the ball, right?. However, in the screen, I'm looking right at the goal, but when my player starts the run up, the screen switches. Should I keep holding down left during the switch?
Also, does anybody effectively use the R1 or R2 buttons for their free kicks?
Thanks for the help,
Charles

I haven't played WE8, but if it's the same as 7, you are doing the right thing. You have to hold on to it.
But first at 25 yards out, you wont need R1 and R2. You first hold down, and push square at about half way (maybe slightly more than halfway). Then, when the screen changes and player starts to run towards the ball, you push down left. Remember you have to "aim to miss" depending on your player's curling ability to place the ball just right at the corner.
It has been such a long time, but maybe it's better if you don't push down at 25 yards out. It might be too far out. Push square to tiny bit (like 1/16 of an inch) over halfway, than just push left.
from top of my head, when to use R1 R2 Up and down using an "ideal" player.
17-20 yards: Both R2 and Down.
20-23 yards: either R2 and down.
23-24 yards: no buttons.
24-28 yards: either R1 and up.
28+: Both R1 and up.
maybe I got R1 and R2 mixed up, but that looks about right. It's even possible to score corner kicks, so keep trying. In we7, i've scored from 42 yards out. Its just comes down to luck after a certain point.

Thanks for the help! The aiming thing is tough -- I can curve the ball in the general direction of where I want it, but can't keep it down from in close (which should be the easier opportunities.) I'll try messing around with some kicks by pressing down, then left and let you know how it goes.

Yeah. It is much easier to score from up close. You have to have the bar slightly less than half.

umm...shouldnt you be holding forward and lateral direction, not down?
anyway, dont worry, freekicks in WE8 suck. they are improved in the new one. the easiest way to score in WE8 is to use the new indirect fk option.

Is this hitting select, so that 2 players stand over the ball?
I've actually found more success with this than the normal FKs.

Ya. Put two players over it, touch the ball to the other player, and let him rip it. From within 25 m I have scored many freekicks like this.
