is that he scored the goal with his left foot, and looked comfortable doing it. Great skill to have.

Thoughts?

I actually don't think EJ shoots very well.he gets in awesome positions, but he does not hit the ball very cleanly.I think his problem is partly that he has big feet.People with big feet have trouble getting a good contact on the instep. I have never seen him put the ball on frame from more than about 15 yeard out .
Not criticizing him, because he has obviously been effective- but shooting( as opposed to scoring) seems to be the weakest part of his game.

Agrees. I actually thought he had kind of mis-hit the shot was was lucky that it hit the post and went in. It would be interesting to track where most of his goals are scored from, but I would expect almost all of them came within 10 yards of the goal.

Remember, he still is work in progress. I want to see how he reacts after a couple of bad games.

I don't know about the quality of his striking the ball but he seems to know how to slow down that last stride so as to move or freeze the keeper as he likes. Similarly, he's got that apparent lack of rythym which defenders and 'keepers rely on discerning so as to anticpate and react. He knows his rythym but the opposition can't find it.

Left footed to the far corner is a pretty classy way to score.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who closely follows MLS. GAM had a couple of quality left-footed finishes last season. The goal he scored against Jamaica was also left-footed.

And let's not get too exited about the fact that our best forward can shoot with his "weak" foot. If you're a forward at this level and you can't shoot with your left, you better have a helluva right, and vice versa.

Yeah, any international player should be able to at least play decently with either foot. The exceptions to this are few and far between and need to have some outstanding skills with their strong foot to have a chance at all of amounting to much.

Heck, decent high school or college players are expected to be able to play with two feet last I remember. I'm an old guy who plays in hack around leagues and I score about the same amount with my left as with my right when I play.

Being two-footed is a pretty basic skill. You usually always have one that is somewhat stronger, but a side footer inside the box is something any pro should be able to do with either foot.

Eddie is graceful...without looking graceful. I love the way he turns toward goal and just takes off when he receives the ball. Works well with his back to goal too.

Van Nistelrooy has done alright for himself without scoring many goals from more than 10 yards out. You know what you call a player that scores most of his goals from more than 10 yards out? A midfielder!!! EJ is a striker and if the team is doing its job, he shouldn't have to shoot from outside too often.

By and chance did you guys see the free kick he took, I think against Columbus Crew, it was probably little past 23 yards out, he hit it perfectly.

But at the level of play(internationl), shouldn't he be good at shooting not decent?

Buddle had a goal similar to this. About 25 yards out, freekick. He hit it with the outside of his foot and it couldn't have fit into the far post upper corner any better. Ring had no chance.

I watched a tape of the game tonight with a friend. Here is the scariest thing about EJ. He got much much better as the game went on. His touch improved. His fitness level was outstanding. I think that this is a guy that can go to Europe without burning out. He has the fitness to handle the stress.

Buddle's free kick was outstanding, but t was the camer angle that allowed everyone to appreciate it. Great stuff.

"Manchester United want to sign USA international Eddie Johnson, 20. And the feeling's mutual. "The EPL. That's me. That's where it is," Johnson said, before making one of those funky 8 Mile hand-signs that the Fiver always gets wrong and looks painfully unhip as a consequence."

I thought he got a good strike on it with his left. He wasn't trying to blast it top corner with some killer strike, he just calmly slotted it inside the post.. no luck involved as far as I'm concerned. Very good clean shot. His communication with Landon was also very nice on that play.. seems like they might make a good partnership at striker, like Landon and Ching were, except EJ has more speed and calmness in the attacking third.
