Keith's Response: Gambino is a German who also holds an Italian Passport. I believe his father is Italian and his mother German. He's 21 years old.

I believe I've read somewhere he would prefer Italy. I have yet to see him play, does he have international calibre?

Keith's Response: He made that Italy statement about two or three years ago. I'm pretty sure he'll play for which country calls first. I think he'd love it to be Italy for his father, but if Germany calls first, I'm sure he'll play.
He was showing international potential before his recent knee injury. He hasn't played much since he's been back in training. I don't know if that's because of his not being 100% or if he can't make it back into the lineup because of the presence of a so-far unbelievably good for the team Ebi Smolarek and the re-emergence of Lars Ricken. Time will tell.

at 21 years of age, and all the competition for the striker position in the Italian national team (Gilardino, Cassano, Totti, Toni, Di Michele, Esposito, Montella) I bet Germany may call first and the fact he plays in the Bundesliga so the German national team can scout him a lot easier. But if he is patient he has time to develop and Im sure Lippi will call him eventualy if he gets back to first team football with Dortmund.

Gambino is going to need time. He may never make it to that level. He's a good player and has the potential, but lost too much time this season due to injury. He is in the club's plans for the future. Watch out for him, but not this season. I think it would be best to start watching him next season.
