This film is finally getting a showing where I live through the yearly International Film Festival we have here in the Twin Cities. The film is now a couple of years old and they usually only show the most recent films, but-heh, I am thinking of seeing it on the big screen.
Anybody seen it? Good? Sappy? Melodramatic?

Man, I wanna is this movie too. I seen about half of it and it looks a little FCHollywood in parts if ya know what I mean ;) . Still if it comes out in limited release over here finally, I would like to see it on the big screen also. Thanks for the heads up D. F.

It´s worth watchin but dont expect a movie dealing with soccer all the time. It is more about the situation in (west)Germany after the war generally and the relationship between a father and his son in particular. But of course the WC and the german national team is still a big part of that movie.

That's cool. A little post Stunde null???
We are getting a lot of German films recently. I just saw, on the big screen the other night der Untergang (downfall), which I liked. One of those movies where you walk out and you don't know what to feel.

Yes der Untergang surely stirred some controverse discussion over here.
And i didnt really liked it that it was nominated for an Oscar. The acting is brilliant though.
Have you seen Good bye Lenin?

Have not seen that one yet though it is out on DVD here and I have seen the previews. Seems funny. Good?

I for one would strongly recommend it, i loved it. Its not really a comedy though, more of a drama with some funny moments...or something like that...bittersweet you know... The previews here indicated a comedy too but its not.

Bruno Ganz was superb in it.

Dont get me wrong, its a good movie and maybe even worth an Oscar but it felt really strange... you know like one could say :"Now the germans send Hitler to get an Oscar for them." Well maybe its just me...

Good movies mentioned so far, even though I have to admitt that I could not catch der Untergang yet. best recent German film is in my honest opinion die fetten Jahre sind Vorbei (I think the English title is 'Intruders'), a really entertaining movie with great humor. You don't do anything wrong watching those movies, it won't be wasted money, trust me on that.

IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408777/) has it as The Edukators

No..No.. I get what you're saying. Funny story that statement reminds me of back when Das Boot get nominated for an Oscar. It didn't win and one movie critic said "No way it was gonna win not enough Nazi's in it!"

To be honest, I felt exactly the same way... It is just not apropriate to give an Oscar for such a movie.

That's exactly why I want the movie. I want to know more about the years between the end of WWII and the "West German" resurgence of the 50's-90's. My daughter is returning from Germany on April 21st and I asked her mother to send me a DVD of the movie.

Now I haven't seen this movie, but if you're interested in the 1954 final itself, there's another "Das Wunder von Bern" movie out there, a reconstruction of the final (partly in colour!) that lasts 37 minutes together with the original radio broadcast. That short movie is highly recommended. The final was reconstructed utilising various sources to celebrate the 50th anniversary and ZDF showed it last July.

That was one of my favorite parts of "Tor" by Uli Hesse-Lichtenberger. His description of the announcer's (Zimmerman?)commentary was just great
Schaefer nach innen geflankt... Kopfball... Abgewehrt. Aus dem Hintergrund müsste Rahn schiessen... Rahn schiesst! Tor! Tor! Tor! Tor!
Stille.
Tor für Deutschland! Drei zu zwei führt Deutschland. Halten Sie mich für gerückt, halten Sie mich für übergeschnappt!
translation
Shaefer puts in the cross... header... Cleared. Rahn must shoot from deep... Rahn shoots! Goal! Goal! Goal! Goal!
Silence.
Goal for Germany! Germany lead 3-2. Call me mad, call me crazy!"
Thanks for the info Gregoriak. Will keep my eyes open

There is also one Lego Brick movie about the Final in 1954 out in the Internet, i'll look for a link tomorrow. It is played to the original (German) radio Commentary. Fun to watch.
