Good for them - a meaningless competition clogging up an already congestid European schedule.

Who cares about clogging up - there is more to life than club football!

Without club football you have no international football.

Why would Germany have been going in the first place?

I was under the impression that Italy would have been the first choice anyway, as France's position as host gives Italy the European slot.
Unless, of course, FIFA decided to ask the previous champion rather than the runner-up as a France sub.
I bet FIFA will ask Italy now. If they decline, I bet Portugal is asked, and accepts.

I'd go with Portugal. They don't have to qualify for Euro 2004 and they need to vet new players and get revenge for losing to the USA.

"Without club football you have no international football."
But club football never galvanises a nation like national team football does. Remember all those flags of St George on display in England when the English thought they would win the Copa?!!
