Listen little man, Sweden is spelled with one "e" and another thing just because youre american it doesnt mean youre national team is good.
Perhaps you think im partial and overestimate Sweden but, well lets see lost against Holland with penalties and became the happy surprise at E.C then, beated Bulgaria 5-0. But i got to say most of our players is overrated, i dont like ljungberg, Zlatan or not even Larsson, the swedish national team is based on the whole team.

Yes we have been top 8, a couple of times.

Most successfull time was 1958 when we got second behind Brazil

You know what in the semifinals we won against West Germany 3-1 when they (West Germany) was one of the best in the world.

But you know i dont like our national team either.

Scenario:

World Cup 2006: Group Stage Bahrein-USA 3-1 haha.

Listen USA is in a conspiracy with FIFA and therefore they are ranked 10th best.
Its not by the progress in your football, its because FIFA want USA to like football and to get all your money. So simple is that.
You cant honestly say you are one of the 10 best teams in the world?
If you do, then you are truly an american idiot.

MLS is doing quite well considering how the NHL just died. After 10 years there is expansion and now with Chievas an attempt to bring in other soccer cultures.

As far as the US men's team being ranked 10th in the world, I believe that they will get qualified and , depending on the draw, have a good chance to make it out of the group. Eddie Johnson, Eddie Lewis, Landon, et al are still growing into a team and I hope they can by the WC.

Agree that you dont deserve top 10 in the world.

Actually this is our second round of expansion. The Fire came in after two seasons along with a team that is no longer with us.

Thanks Doc I had forgotten to mention that and also the fact MLS survived losing 2 teams.

Anyone know who's up next for expansion?

First of all, I completely do not trust, what are advertised as, television ratings. I truly feel these are made up figures to sway viewers on what they should be watching. Who are these Nielson families and how often are they
changed? As everyone here knows, there is an absolute prejudice against Soccer on T.V.. The reasons are obvious, no commercial slots every few minutes like we have in our beloved American sports. Football: 3 second play,
30 second commercial slot, 3 sec. play, etc. Baseball: even more suitable.
Soccer is not slow and cut up like these games. When they do air MLS games,
I feel they purposely try to dull it down (not that MLS needs any help there)
to suppress the growth of the game. Don't believe that? Watch the camera production of an EPL game versus and ABC broadcast and listen to the announcers.
As far as Landon goes, I like him but I think his running back home with his tail between his legs lost him credibility as a great potential player. He failed his first time out, now was his time to go back and show how he has matured.
Instead, he just failed again. He is not a draw anymore.
Chivas will help, Real probably a little bit too for a while. EJ, for those who follow the game may get some additional viewers. (like 3 or 4 more).
Go FC Dallas.

Has anyone ever compared a Champions League telecast on ESPN compared to a MLS telecast? Even though it is the same network the two broadcasts are very different. Why is that?

Different announcers for one. Why I'm not sure, but they do. Second, the TV pictures for CL are produced for a worldwide audience, whereas MLS' telecasts are done by ESPN. Third, the announcers for MLS games are on-site, the CL announcers are calling the game from Bristol, CT.

What do you mean exactly?

You know what else, soccer announcers for espn (rob Stone) are boring, but the CL announcers almost make rob sound like andres cantor!!!!!

First of all, you said US teams dont have a chance against top 5 european teams. So what?! If you want a real comparison, you will need to compare US to a SINGLE country. Not a continent.

If you want to talk continents, that is different.

Second of all...FIFA is run by french bastards who hate the US. Why in hell would they want the US to become more popular?

Third. SWEDEN SUCKS. You are just like all the hondurans I know who seem to think that Honduran soccer is the best of the best, because they beat Brazil. Once. Not any more, just once. A long time ago.

I agree I use to live in Honduras and the only good team they have is Olimpia and they play in El Estadio Nacional which is a piece of crap. Their national team has one good player whom they call Tyson even though he looks nothing like Mike Tyson.

As for Sweden who cares. They aren't an international player in sports, politics, economics or any other world events. Actually, they are okay at the Winter Olympics, but who really cares about the that. What has Swedish soocer do lately. Even your womens national team now sucks.

We already are good in soccer. have you checked the FIFA rankings???? i just simply love your sarcasim by the way!!! Yeah I guess being named one of the best 11 for world cup 2002 must really be crappy for Reyna. Being the best keepers in the english premier league must suck to. I guess you have to be crappy to when you beat portugal in a world cup. I guess you have to suck to beat a brazilian team with romario, tafarel, edmundo, (still in prime!) by the way:

yeah, its to bad we're dumb cause we at least know how to spell!!!! :D

I'm enjoying reading Claudio Reyna's book More Than Goals. He talks about when he and his brother were young, and gives soccer tips, it's a good book if you're a Claudio Reyna fan.

Hey, since we're talking about how the USA compares to other countries, I don't know if anyone would find this interesting, but I crunched some numbers to combine the FIFA and ELO world rankings. FIFA ranks the USA 10, and the ELO rankings put the USA at 14. I scaled the ELO points to match the range of the FIFA points, so the numbers would be compatible, and then averaged them together, and the combined FIFA/ELO ranking of the USA (figured that way) was still 10th in the world. My results of doing this:

Combined Top 20 FIFA/ELO World Rankings for June 2005:

1 Brazil 1961
2 Argentina 1947
3 Czech Republic 1943
4 Netherlands 1939
5 England 1913
6 France 1903
7 Spain 1884
8 Mexico 1879
9 Portugal 1868
10 USA 1843
11 Italy 1842
12 Sweden 1837
13 Greece 1826
14 Germany 1814
15 Ireland 1812
16 Iran 1809
17 Denmark 1803
18 Croatia 1803
19 Turkey 1801
20 Japan 1793

I thought, maybe, by combining two systems the results might be less biased? (ELO is a mod of the system used to rank the world's chess players.)

You know, actually, I've always wondered about that. There's money to be made in America from soccer, it is/was an untapped market. US Soccer is part of FIFA. MLS was formed to "fullfil a promise to US Soccer." This is what I've read. For 40 years, America couldn't make it to a world cup. There were, I think, two Concacaf spots. That was part of the reason. (Typically, Mexico and maybe the Ticos, I think.) Today, they've added more spots, so as many as four from Concacaf go to the world cup. It's almost like they've made it so the USA can't help but qualify for every world cup from now on. I don't have a problem with any of this. To me, maybe, the "higher ups" at FIFA simply have made a plan to help promote soccer in the US, and I'm glad because I like soccer. (I never want to see other sports disappear, but it would be nice if I could turn on the tv and see soccer news once in a while, just like other sports.)

The only thing that really puzzles me is this. I think the USA national team really is about 10th in the world... but MLS is way less than EPL/European soccer... how does that work? Anybody have any thoughts on that?

Same reason the Argentina basketball team is #1 in the world, yet the league is inferior. Only 11 players are on the field at any time.

nascar ppl probrably said the same thing 5 - 10 yrs ago. remember the old days only time you'd see nascar was if there was a big-time accident. NOW, you can't run away from it. (Though I try hard :p ) the reason nascar is is on tv now, is because ppl want to put thier advertisements for nascar stuff. why? becuase the ratings are there. in a way having a bigger profits in advertising allows a bigger budget on tv production. AND in the case of mls, that would mean a bigger budget on PLAYERS.

If you really loved soccer & specially MLS soccer now would be the time to sponsor the leauge. Of course do we see McDonalds? No. Do we see Wal-mart? Why even Mastercard left us. Yet, they still advertise soccer stuff around the world. So if anyone here owns a company... well you know...

Yeah, thanks, that's what I was thinking, too. Like how England's B or C team can still beat our A team (minus two players), you're talking about how much depth your national team has, I see, thanks.
