Czech Republic 4-3 Finland

Armenia 2-1 Andorra
[Hakobyan 32, Khachatryan 73; F. Silva 53]

Holland took a commanding lead of Group after a standard and hard-earned victory over Romania in Bucharest. Elsewhere, Finland and the Czech Republic played out a 7 goal thriller in Teplice. Milan Baros, Tomas Rosicky and Jan Polak giving the home-side a 3-1 lead, but a superb comeback from the Finns looked to have given them a crucial away point, only for substitute Vratislav Lokvenc to steal the win. In the other match, minnows Armenia and Andorra squared off in Yerevan mainly to scrap out the place for last spot. Despite taking the lead in the first half, Andorra fought back, and the home-side needed a Romik Khachatryan goal to get the win.

Georgia 1-3 Greece
[Astiani 23; Kapsis 43, Vryzas 45, Giannakopoulos 54]

Ukraine lead the group despite not playing and will look to keep their unbeaten record intact when they host Denmark in Kyiv on Wednesday. The Danes picked up a rudimentary 3 points against basement dwellers Kazakhstan, with Peter Moller, the late-call up to the National team squad, scoring twice. In Istanbul, Turkey looked to get back on track with a easy 2-0 win over Albania. Greece however suffered a huge shock in Tbilisi, when Malkhaz Astiani gave the home side a 23rd minute lead. But two quick-fire goals before half-time put the Greeks back into the ascendancy, with Botlon’s Stelios Giannakopolous rounding off the win in the second half.

[T. Beck 40; Kerzhakov 23, Karyaka 36]

Estonia 1-2 Slovakia
[Oper 58; Mintal 59, Reitner 66]

With Portugal not playing. Both Russia and Slovakia looked to gain ground on the leaders. Russia had the easier task, or so it would seem, against surprise package Leichtenstein, playing out of their skins at the minute. Had it not been for Mario Frick’s last minute miss from close-range, they could have been toasting yet another scalp in one of their most productive qualification campaigns ever. The Slovaks kept up with the pace and pulled off a neat 2-1 win in Tallinn. Despite falling behind to Adreas Oper’s goal, a quick response by the Bundelsiga’s topscorer Marek Mintal and Lubomir Reitner, gave them three priceless points.

Results:

France 0-0 Switzerland

Israel 1-1 Ireland
[Suan 90; Morrisson 6]

4 teams still remain locked at the top. Both Ireland, France and Israel on 9 and the Swiss with 6 and a game in hand. After all four played off on Saturday, we are none the wiser who will take the qualification spots. A stalemate at the Stade de France, meant that the away side will be more than happy with the result. As a consequence, the 1998 World Champions are without a home win or a home goal in the campaign and will need to turn the current trend around, if they want to play in Germany. Ireland could have moved clear at the top of the group, after a well-taken Clinton Morrison goal looked to have given them all the points in Tel-Aviv, but substitute Abbas Suan‘s, long-range shot snatched them a point. France travel to Israel midweek, while the Swiss host Cyprus.

6.Moldova 4 0 1 3 1- 9 1

Result:

Italy 2-0 Scotland
[Pirlo 35, 85]

With only one game played in Group 5, Italy moved 5 points clear at the top making up for their shock 1-0 loss away to Slovenia earlier in the campaign. Two magnificently struck free-kicks from Milan’s Andrea Pirlo sent Scotland packing in Milan. They need a minor miracle now to have any chance of even getting the playoff spot.

4.N. Ireland 5 0 3 2 5-12 3
5.Wales 5 0 2 3 5-10 2
6.Azerbaijan 5 0 2 3 1-12 2

With all home-nations in action, both Poland and England looked to move forward and speed up their process for tickets for the World Cup In Germany against less favourable opposition. A second half revival by England meant they ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over rivals Northern Ireland at Old Trafford. Poland went one better, or shall I say 4 better, as they crushed lowly Azerbaijan 8-0, with Tomasz Frankowski grabbing a hat-trick. The result was not enough to go above England, but kept them in touch at the top, just a point behind the group leaders. In Cardiff, Wales' faint hopes of qualification were dealt a damaging blow, as Austria inflicted a quick-fire late-show. Veteran striker Ivica Vastic and Martin Stranzl in the last 8 minutes of the match made the home-side rue their missed opportunities.

All eyes will be turned on Wednesdays action, when Serbia and Montenegro play Spain, in a battle of the leaders, which could decide the outcome of the group. Belgium will also look to make it two in two as they play minnows San Marino.

Bulgaria 0-3 Sweden
[Ljungberg 17, 90 (pen), Edman 73]

Croatia 4-0 Iceland
[Kovac 39, 76, Simiunic 71, Prso 90]

Sweden took the initative in Sofia, with a 3-0 win over Group 8 hopefuls Bulgaria. The result leaves the Swedes top of the Group 2 ahead of Croatia, who easily beat Iceland 4-0 in Zagreb. Croatia now have a game in hand in second and have a better head to head record against the Swedes thanks to their 1-0 win in Sweden in the opening stages of the group. With Bulgaria now languishing 3rd after that bitter blow, they will have to hope that they can regain their form with a win in Hungary, and that Malta will do the unthinkable and beat Croatia away on Wednesday.

Best Runners up:

NB: The best runner-up is decided as thus - The teams are graded on their results against teams that have finished 1st, 3rd and 4th. The team with greater number of points therefore qualifies. At this stage it is hard to gauge how this will work out, due to the fact that we don’t know who will finish where and because they haven’t played all the teams yet.. The easiest way to see how it will get there, is to work out the point-average of the 2nd placed teams (I.e - the number of points divided by the number of games.)

Slovakia - 2.6 (13 points out of 5)
Croatia - 2.5 (10 out of 4)
Czech Republic - 2.4 (12 points out of 5)
Poland - 2.4 (12 points out of 5)

If both Poland and the Czech Republic have the same point average at the end, then it will be down how they fared against the various placed teams. It does seem complicated. But we can easily see how it will work by using the point average system. The 1-3-4 system is used mainly as a tiebreaker. Generally speaking, if you have a high point average it is inevitable that you have had good results against your nearest rivals. Although this isn’t an exact rating, it gives us a good idea.

Using the 1-3-4 method.

P W D L pts

Croat 3 2 1 0 7
Czech 3 2 0 1 6
Poland 3 2 0 1 6
Greece 3 1 2 0 5
Spain 2 1 1 0 4
Slovak 2 1 1 0 4

As you can see, the above is slightly unfair, given that Slovakia haven't played Portugal yet. Although Croatia is top of the pile given their win in Sweden. However the others in that table haven’t played all other teams yet, which invalidates it somewhat. The point average method, gives us the best outlook as to who will become the best runners up. It is not to be taken as the actual method to decide the best-runner up. This will become much clearer when we near the latter stages.

[Valencia 32, 50, Mendez 45, 48, Ayovi (pen) 76; Cardozo (pen) 9, Cabanas 14]

Brazil 1-0 Peru
[Kaka 73]

South American giants Brazil and Argentina both took steps to qualification with crucial wins. Argentina fighting back from 1-0 down to nab a crucial win in La Paz. Brazil, the current holders snuck a win against Peru thanks to a well-worked goal by Milan’s Kaka. The other two remaining spots for the World Cup, remains wide open, with practically everyone in a position to get qualification. Venezuela and Colombia both locked each other out, as an extra two points for either side, would have pushed them into direct qualification spots. Ecuador produced a stunning comeback in Quito in a 7 goal thriller. Paraguay going two up in the space of 5 minutes, but Antonio Valencia and Edison Mendez firing them into a 5 goal blitz to grab three precious points. They now occupy third place and will look to cement this, with a win in Peru. A defeat for the home side there, could mean the end of their hopes of qualifying. There is all to play for too at La Paz, with the bottom side Bolivia taking on Venezuela. A defeat for the home-side will surely mean the end of their dreams for Germany. Whereas Venezuela can look to climb the extremely open table. Brazil will therefore look to maintain the 4 point gap in second place when they travel to Uruguay. Argentina will try and carry on their success at the top of the league, when they entertain Colombia, in need of points.

Despite the ugly scenes at Bamako, it is both Zambia and Senegal that lead the pack. The 2002 World Cup hereos lead the way with a 6-1 crushing of poor Liberia. Are you sure about this? I know this is what was used in the past but 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany, European zone draw for the preliminary competition (http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/releases/uefa_preliminary_format_en.pdf) document from FIFA (look at page 3 bullet item above "2nd Stage" which is at the bottom of the page) says that 1-3-4-5-6 method will be used.

Sagy. The 1-3-4 method is pretty much the same as the 1-3-4-5-6-(7) method.

In so much as I used the results from the stronger ranked teams.

Although it is not very good to see who at this stage will be the best-runner up, it is best to use the point average method.

By doing so, we get a good estimate.

At this stage its hard to see who will be the best runner-up till about September time.

As I said before, its kinda used as a tie-breaker between teams. :)

Netherlands 2-0 Armenia
[Castelen 3, Van Nistelrooy 33]

The Czech Republic made it an easy win in the small Pyrenees nation of Andorra with a easy 4-0 win. Anything else would have been a shock, but they now have 2 wins in 2 qualifying games over the week. Another side in this frame of mind, is the Dutch, who completed an fairly routine victory over the resilient Armenians. And early Romeo Castelen strike from close-range gave the Dutch a dream start, before Ruud Van Nistelrooy made it safe before the break. Romania also kept in touch with the top two after a Nicolae Mitea double in the nearby Macedonian republic kept any chance of qualification alive and well. The table now looks to be heading into a three way battle. The crucial games will be in Ocotber when the Dutch travel to the Czech Republic and the Romanians play away in Finland. However all that cannot be resumed until the June fixtures, when The Netherlands have the somewhat harder task of facing the Romanians at home, before playing away in Finland. The Czech Republic on the other hand have two fairly standard home matches against Andorra and Macedonia.

Greece 2-0 Albania
[Charisteas 34, Karagounis 85]

The Greeks keep the pressure on the Ukrainians at the top, after a 2-0 home win against neighbours Albania, made it 4 wins on the trot for the European champions. The Ukraine allowed themselves to remain three points clear after a scrappy Andrej Voronin goal gifted them a 1-0 win over Denmark in Kyiv. Turkey are now also in serious contention as they inflicted another crushing home loss on Georgia, as they strolled out of Tbilisi with 3 points, thanks to a 5-2 win. With Denmark seemingly out of the race, it will be something of a three way attack for qualification for Germany. With the Ukrainians facing Kazakhstan at home in June, it will be the crunch derby match in Istanbul, that could well decide the potential rival to the Ukraine challenge. If the Greeks came out of victorious then they may well head into a home tie against the Ukraine, knowing a win would steer them top of the group.

Slovakia 1-1 Portugal
[Karhan (pen) 8; Postiga 62]

The top two teams in Group 3 squared off in Bratislava knowing that a win for either side would send them top of the group and open up an early lead. Slovakia took the lead when Marek Mintal was brought down in the area and Miroslav Karhan’s scuffed penalty found the corner. Despite holding the Portuguese out, it was substitute Helder Postiga, who poked in a decisive goal to send the Portuguese top of Group 3 on a marginal head to head record. The result was bad news for Russia, who also suffered a major blow to their hopes after dropping points away to Estonia in Tallinn. Andrey Arshavin of Zenit Saint-Petersburg put the hosts ahead, only for Sergei Terehnov to level. The other game, saw Latvia overcome no-hopers Luxembourg with a comfortable 4-0 win. All eyes well be on June, when the Russians must prove they have one chance left, when they take Latvia at home, in a must win game. It could prove crucial as the Slovakians and Portuguese square off once more, in a do or die Group 3 game. The Portuguese then travel to Estonia, whilst the Slovaks play away to bottom-side Luxembourg.

France continue there nightmare campaign as they could muster only a point in Tel-Aviv. David Trezeguet out France ahead on 50 minutes, but was to see red just 5 minutes later. A head-butt on Bolton Wanderer’s Ben Tal-Haim meant that France were quickly reduced to ten-men. And they were made to pay, when Israel’s persistence paid off and Walid Badir scored, to give Israel two home points against their nearest rivals and to keep them in touch with everyone else. The result though was good news for the Swiss, as they beat a determined Cyprus at home. A last minute goal by the French league’s top-scorer, Alexander Frei gave them a massive lift and are now a point behind Israel and France with a game in hand. In June, France have no scheduled games meaning that both the Irish and the Swiss could take advantage and get a lead of the group. Switzerland face the minnows the Faroe Islands away, whilst Ireland take on Israel in Dublin. The Irish then have the task of also taking on the bottom side in their backyard as well.

Without the Italians playing, Norway and Slovenia could both make ground on the group-leaders. Norway travelled to Chisinau looking to overcome the bottom side Moldova. A stalemate meant that dropped big points in the quest to for that second place, playoff spot. Slovenia however couldn’t capitalise on the Norwegians inability to score, as they drew 1-1 at home, to surprise package Belarus. Belarus are now on 5 points, three behind Norway and Slovenia and with a game in hand. In June, Slovenia face a reverse trip to Belarus, whilst the Norwegians and Italians face each other in Oslo. Scotland play bottom side Moldova, looking for that elusive first win. 4 days later then they travel to Minsk to take Belarus, who could well be in a serious contention for a playoff position if results go their way.

England looked to make it two comfortable home wins out of two, when they took Azerbaijan in Newcastle. Despite a resilient defensive attitude by the Azeris, they came out victorious by two goals to nil. Poland kept up the pressure on the English by beating Northern Ireland at home. Only a 86th minute winner by Marcej Zurawski was the difference between the two sides. It was also a late effort which was the key difference between Wales and Austria in Vienna. A long-range effort by Rene Aufhauser was fumbled in by Wales keeper Danny Coyne, much to his dismay. It’s a result that signals the end of the Welsh campaign for Germany 2006. In September, England take on the Welsh in Cardiff, whilst Poland have the opportunity to go ahead in the group (albeit for a few months.) when they play away in Azerbaijan.

The top two teams in the group played out a goal-less draw in Belgrade, it’s a result that the Spanish will be pleased with, but the home-side less so. Despite keeping their record of clean-sheets alive, Serbia and Montenegro only have a slender two point lead at the top. Elsewhere, Lithuania grabbed a crucial point in Bosnia to go with the same number of points as the Spanish. The result leaves the Bosnians without a win and languishing in 5th place. Bottom side San Marino could have made a huge impact on the world of football, especially when Andrea Selva levelled it a 1-1 in the first half against the Belgians. Only a goal by Hamburg’s Daniel Van Buyten spared the Red Devils’ blushes. In the summer, Serbia will play host to Belgium looking to stay ahead of the pack. Spain play host to hopefuls Lithuania, whilst Bosnia will look for their maiden win away to San Marino. A few days later, Spain and Bosnia will square off in the Iberian peninsula.

Argentina 1-0 Colombia
[Crespo 65]

Argentina continue their lead at the top of the group thanks to a Hernan Crespo strike in 65th minute against Colombia. Brazil’s draw in Uruguay meant that the Argentineans have opened up a 4 point gap at the top and a 11 point of the direct qualification places. The group is still wide open as it ever was, thanks in part to Peru’s draw at home to Ecuador. Peru now occupy a group of three teams on 14 points, after coming back in the second half to grab a point. The other two teams on 14 are Chile and Venezuela, who both lost away to Paraguay and Bolivia respectively. Bolivia’s win doesn’t take them off the bottom, but it does allow them to regain their hopes for qualification. They are now just 4 points off a playoff spot. That spot is occupied by Colombia who remain there despite losing to Argentina. Paraguya moved into the direct places however thanks to that 2-1 at home to Chile. So, its with the amazingly wide open group, where 8 of 10 could either fail or succeed in getting a place in the World Cup that the action continues in the summer. Brazil will tackle Paraguay at home, whilst Argentina travel to Ecuador. Bolivia look to carry on their mini-revival when they play away to Chile, while Colombia and Peru look to battle it out for precious points in the mix of badly needed points. A few days later, the top two giants, Brazil and Argentina play each other in Buenos Aries, whilst Peru, Chile, Paraguay and Colombia play host to Uruguay, Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador.

Despite taking the lead, they were pegged back by Luis Tejada. Trinidad and Tobago failed to clinch their opening win of the group, as they drew a blank with Costa Rica. The results leave the USA back into the direct qualification spots. Guatemala remain in contention, whilst Panama’s draw to Mexico gave them a chance of obtaining a playoff spot at this very early tentative stage. Trinidad and Tobago’s chances look very far off, and they will need to turn the corner fast of they want to make an impact. In June, the USA play host to Costa Rica in Utah, whilst, Mexico take on Guatemala away. Venezuela are 9th, not 6th - I mistook the tie-breaker as head to head and not Goal Difference.

So scrap that.

They are eliminated BUT have are still in a shout for the African Cup of nations. Top 3 automatically qualify along with the best 4th place team unless Egypt (the hosts) finish outside the top 3 in their group. ;)

So Mali, Sudan and Benin are eliminated from the WC2006 but can still qualify for the CAN next year in Egypt.

North/Central America and the Caribbean: Mexico, USA and Guatemala.
Play-offs: Uruguay, Costa Rica, Spain, Sweden, Greece, Slovakia, Israel, Norway, Australia or the Solomon Islands, and Kuwait or Bahrain. You forget to take into account games in hand which put Ireland and Switerland ahead of both France and Israel, and IIRC Kenya ahead of Tunisia and Morocco in group 5.

I didn't forget, FIFA World Cup forgot. In a UEFA group with an even number of teams such as the one in question, it would be simpler if every team in the group (France, Ireland Republic, Switzerland, Israel, Cyprus, and Faroe Islands) played on the same ten days.
As for Africa Group 5, Kenya (second in points) is already ahead of Tunisia (tied with Guinea on points with Tunisia having one less game played). Kenya is three points behind group leading Morocco and even if you give Kenya three points from their game in hand, Morocco has a goal differential of +6 and Kenya is -2. Morocco is the only undefeated team in African qualifiers.

Thats odd, I had two, lists that contradicited that, then I saw another one that went by the same way that goes....

If that's the case then Venezuela would be above Chile and Colombia, yet they are not. ???

Its GD first I think - head to head, to seperate the important placings at the end.

Very odd. I'll look into that. I have conflicting info on that.
