Hello all. I train wingers, and therefor my best players are wingers. I'm considering using the strategy Attack on Wing so that i can take full advantage of my great wingers. I've heard that the 4-5-1 formation is the best formation to use when playing AOW. I have two questions:

1) IS the 4-5-1 formation the best option when using attack on wing?

2) if i am to play a 4-5-1, how shall i have my players set up? This is the way its been suggested to me.. see if you agree:

2 offensive wingbacks
2 normal central defenders
2 offensive wings
2 defensive inner midfielders
1 normal forward
1 forward played as inner midfielder

thanks for your help!

Winger trainer as well.

I used a 4-5-1 last friendly in a match. I didn't play my IM's defensive, since I was using two CD's. Got a favorable result with him slightly winning the possesion battle. Also played my WB's normal which helped my defense.

He and I are both VI teams and were competing in the BS cup.

I plan on implementing this formation at least once and maybe twice in the next few weeks. My feeling is that I need a little more Defense to squelch my oppositions attacks and help me secure #1 in my series. I have the MF to win possesion, but I feel I need a little more D to stop chances. Will gladly sacrifice Central attack to focus attacks on the Wings with AOW. I don't think the weakening Central Def will be much of a factor in a 4-5-1.

Good luck and let me know how yours works out. Watch my next two league matches. Will pull it out at least once.

BTW, take everything I say with a grain of salt. I haven't been playing long enough. (1/14/05)

Ignoring your questions here but, If I were you and were going with only 1 forward, I'd make sure he was a darned good one. Preferably an experienced fella with heading ability.

And add in a couple of IMs with Heading abilty if possible. Do it to take full advantage of those crosses.

You may not have this, but long term, I'd be moving toward this if you stick with a 4-5-1.

That and a darned good set pieces guy.

Wing trainer here as well. I haven't messed with AOW a whole lot, but I've been playing 4-5-1 all season as my primary formation.

The only formation that I think would be better is maybe 4-4-2, but you'd have to have 2 stud IM's to be able to win possession that way.

I understand that you're trying to boost the central defence because of the AOW, but playing IM's defensively is also going to take away from the side attack ratings (and central attack obviously).

You may also consider shopping for a forward with Head specialty. I've had one for 2 weeks now and he's already had 2 "winger + Head" goals and 1 "winger + set pieces" goal.

and if u could a few strong IM's would not hurt either... also I will add that I am the guy Kermy beat in the Friendly tournament.. his line up was the first to keep me off the scoresheet in a LONG LONG LONG time...
