23 is a tad old for goalkeeper training.
If you want to train goaltending, to start I'd suggest buying 18-19 year old keepers. Aim for at least a solid in Goakkeeper skill. As you get more money, try to snatch 17yo solids. With luck you might someday have a national team GK playing for your club.

Nope. Only training goaltending will increase their skills.

no, passing isnt necessary for keepers. passing also only trains wingers, midfielders, and fowards

With the new "Through Passing" training, you can add Defenders to that list as well. "Through Passing" trains Defenders, Wingers and Inner Mids in passing.

That will train midfielders and forwards. You can get up to eight players training in a single match if you play a 2-5-3, which is OK for friendlies where the confusion doesn't matter but a bad idea for league matches.

Max for through passing can be 10 in a 5-5-0 setup. Repositioning both forwards, one as Extra IM and one as Extra CD. Same confusion events will occur in this formation as will in 2-5-3.

That's only using the alternative training that doesn't give full passing training.

What do you mean FULL passing training? Short Passing?
Isn't the reason it takes longer due to the ability to have more players trained in a week in that skill?
They both train the Passing Skill just the time to pop is different. Correct me if I am wrong please.
BTW, sorry to take this thread in a whole new direction.

They both train passing, but I believe the difference in the amount of training is a lot more than the difference in the number of players trained. I'd guess that the counterattacking training gives about half defending, half passing, so you would get effectively five spots in a match vs. eight using full passing. The other hazard is that you're more subject to age erosion in training effectiveness when you're not training everybody at 100%, but that's harder to quantify.

I think your confusion (and could be mine) is the new training types. I do not see a training type called Counter Attacking on the rules page.
According to HT rules
Through Passing trains Defenders and Midfielders in Passing.
Defensive Positions trains Defenders and Midfielders in Defending.
You are correct in the amount of time for Short Passing pops being shorter due to formation restrictions limiting players getting training.

I wasn't sure what it was called, and in my estimation it was added to help CA teams that want to get passing training for their defenders without sacrificing their formation, so I was referring to through passes as counterattacking.
As a related example, if I say I'm training wingers, everyone knows what I'm talking about, but the actual training type is called cross passes, not winger.
I'm sorry if there was any confusion from me using an unfamiliar term. My point stands, though... if training through passes, I do not believe you get more than 50% passing training, which gives you fewer effective passing trainees than straight passing along with the age-related negatives that I cited.

If you run a 5-5-0 setup shouldn't you get no training?

no because you have 3 CDs, 2 WBs, 3 IMs, and 2 wingers

As long as you don't have more than 3 players at any one position then you will not lose training. (CD's, IM's, & Forwards are the only positions where this is even possible.)
If you follow that rule, then 5-5-0, 5-3-2 and 2-5-3 are all valid formations. You can't ever gain experience in them, so you will almost always have confusion problems... but you won't lose training.

5-2-3, not 5-3-2, the latter being a trainable formation that defense trainers will use.
