Am I the only one who is genuinely flabbergasted by the Mexican fans' extreme displays of most abominable stupidity that were the "Osama" chants during the match?
We are all passionate about our sport and everyone can appreciate a good rivalry, but aren't there some lines that should not be crossed?
I may be overreacting, after all I am not a CONCACAF fan and this sort of thing can be acceptable in this neck of the woods.

I just imagined for a second the reaction Nazi chants or gas chamber jokes would get at an Israel match.

This is unacceptable, if that did happen, MEX should be punsihed by FIFA

Perhaps the US fans could have retorted by chanting 'Bush' back at them. It would have been equally offensive. ;)

I didn't hear the Osama chants... That is low blow and they should be punished... When the US came to Panama there was a sign that read "Osame is here so lose"... A lot of people here didn¡t like the sign and they removed it after a while... Politics should not be mixed with sports.

I never heard any "Osama" chants (though it did happen in Olympic qualifying) but I did see a banner with "Remember the Twin Towers," nothing else was on it so I don't know if it was supposed to taunt us or it was to show that the people who chanted "Osama" were merely extremist idiots.

As per reports from US fans (see thread in US fans and travel forum) the Osama chanters were a few and were booed by other Mexican fans. They are also reporting that they were well treated at the game.

--- and George Bush killed how many people in Mexico City? Oh, I forgot. He is personally responsible for what ever oppression Mexican citizens experience in their daily lives.

This is the kind of logic French intellectuals used to excuse a vandal's attack on a painting in the Louvre: the vandal's urge to express himself was as valid as Monet's urge to create art.

That way madness lies, but if the Bush name is "equally offensive" to Mexicans, we will certainly chant it at Columbus, while drowning the Mexican national anthem with boos and the Ohio version of the Bronx cheer. I suspect from the winking smiley you merely offer humorous advice. Thanks, not a bad idea.

A majority of them would not do that... But unfortuntely a handful get all the press... It would be like us singing Remember the Alamo, or Cortez/Columbus/De Leon chanting....

What Mexican think about the sept 11 tragedy ? don't they think it's the most horrible terorist attack in the history of mankind ? and by chanting Osama Osama they also hurt some mexican family who are among the sept 11 victims.

The original post is a reaction to the Soccernet full-time report.

The Americans pressured much more at the start of the first half, and Eddie Lewis scored in the 59th minute off a feed from Landon Donovan. Some Mexican fans responded by chanting "Osama! Osama!''

To tell you the truth, I bet Sanchez, Blanco, Marquez and the rest could give a rats ass about the Alamo, so its not the same as Osama chants. And the Espn report is just about 5 dudes who started chanting it and they take it out of proportion. And lastly once/if Osama is captured then the chants will probably cease.
