What would anyone think if the Confederation's Cup didn't include teams that won their confederation's titles, but instead, had teams that were consisted of the very best players from those confederation's in a sort of 'all-tournament' exhibition event? For instance... You would have the best of Asia, Oceana, UEFA, CONCACAF, Africa and CONMEBOL with a team selectd of the best players of the countries within the confederation. Or... I take it back, you could have it as a tournament where the confederation wins with two groups of three (unless I'm missing a region)
I know that this would probably never happen with so many obstacles and players that would probably decline but as a fan I think it would be very interesting to see and I'd go to the matches. Sure. I mean imagine in Asia seeing the best of the players together... from Nakata to Ji-Sung Park and others from all over the region. Or how about even Africa with Eto'O, Lauren and several of the top players of all the countries there. Let alone the obvious star power from Europe or CONMEBOL.
So the question is - would this be something you'd be interested in?

i think its completely stupid. why would clubs risk their players health by having them play in a Region all-star tournament. What is this supposed to prove? When would these players practice? I'd say lets leave teams intact and may the best team when.

Personally i'd scrap the confederations cup altogether, the world cup and the continental championships like the euro and copa already decide who's the best, the schedule's already crowded enough, why even bother playing it, it's just fifa trying to bring in more revenue, having said that i'll still be watching it.

They already announced that from now on the Confederations' Cup will only be every four years, the year before the World Cup (so the host country can have a dress rehearsal).

its a good idea but it will never happen. most of these players are already playing a ton of games every year. the same thing that happens with the confederations cup. 2nd teamers would fill the rosters still and the games would be less than stellar

Very stupid idea. I don't think anyone will be interested in these All Star teams.
The Confederations Cup as it will be now, once each 4 years, with the continental champions, is the best idea.

I mean, c'mon. Have a little imagination! If it really was something serious and the best players played in it, it could be pretty fun for fans to see. When else will you see the very best from your regions play together outside of select elite club football. I know that this would never happen, but I figured it would be something very interesting to watch. The formations you could see, the very best against the very best - tactis used to break down stellar defensive walls. It would almost be like putting together current all-world teams where the only restriction is limiting the players to their confederations.
For practicallity, there are many hurdles and realistically again this could never happen. But there could be fewer games. Who knows what the format could be. Two groups of three with the round-robin group winners playing for the final? The err could be that it will just be CONMEBOL vs. UEFA.

I would rather see it played in the lead up to the World Cup final draw and have all the teams that just missed out on qualification playing. You could use this tournament to decide who fills the final spots in the World Cup proper and scrap the inter continental playoffs that now occur.

But then it's not a Confederations Cup any more, because not the best team of each Confederation play in it, it would just be a last qualifying round. And the draw of the World Cup is most of the times in December. Around that time there is no time to play such a tournement as all major leagues play matches then.

Most of what you say is true. I don't believe the Confederations Cup serves any useful purpose as it is now. Most teams don't send their top teams. Even Australia allowed several players to leave before the 3rd place play off to attend a wedding in the 2001 competition.. We have a place in the calender now for playoffs, it wouldn't be hard to extend that slightly once every 4 years to fit a tournament in.

I have a crazy idea...
make the confederations cup the year after every world cup with 2 groups of 3. The top team from Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, North America and Ocenia (a playoff between the 2 or if Copa America finally brings the best CONCACAF teams in, the winner of that), and the WC winner. The winner of each group plays in the final, the winner of the cup gets an automatic spot in the next world cup finals. This will raise the prestige of the tournament and make it very important, not to mention an extra incentive for teams to win their regional cup. This also fits in since the WC winner no longer gets an automatic spot in the next WC.
Just a thought....
