OK, I have a question for you Brits (and I can't wait 'til tomorrow to ask my favorite ex-pat in person.)
In the UK system of education, what is the difference between University and College? I want to get this straight once and for all.

basically when you turn 16 you have the choice of staying on at school to do a levels or go to college (usually for 2 years) to study another qualification!
most peeps do a levels but i didnt (did a btec nd in music) and then you go to uni (3-4 years from there, usually about the age of eighteen!

One of my favorite Point/Counterpoint editorials in The Onion (www.theonion.com) was "European Guys Are So Romantic" vs. "American Girls Are Easy."
Edit: have to have a subscription to read the archive, though. (I don't have one.)

OK, I have a question for you Brits (and I can't wait 'til tomorrow to ask my favorite ex-pat in person.)
In the UK system of education, what is the difference between University and College? I want to get this straight once and for all.
Secondary Schools [High-school to you] are set-up to focus primarily on GCSE's, which are the main qualification for all 14-16 year olds. After GCSE, students then have the option to leave school and go to work [or not as the case may be] or go into further education.
University's tend not to accept GCSE results as the main criteria for admittance [although in some cases they do] so students have to gain further more advanced qualifications [the main one being the A-level qualification] to show their suitablity for their courses...
Most Secondary School's have 6th forms [for age 16+], where students can study their choosen subjects. The disadvantage being that 6th forms tend to have less available resources for the 6th form students, as i already stated they are mainly focused on & judged by the GCSE results their students obtain. The advantages of 6th form over Colleges are that 6th forms years [the No. of students in the same year] tend to be small in size which allows for more 1-2-1 teaching & often allows for more 'coaching' with regards to grades, deadlines and attendance etc.
The other more popular option is for over 16's to go to College, which in effect acts as a buffer between University and Secondary School. College's in general have more specialised resources, cater for a greater diversity of course subjects & qualifications, and in theory prepare students better [in terms of atmosphere] for University than their 6th form counterparts. There aren't any obvious disadvantages of attending College over 6th form, except for the fact that alot of 16-17 year olds can't handle the freedom they are afforded at College and often lose their way for a time.
Having said all that, i finished my A-level's at 6th form about 3 years ago. I hope that helps.
