I don't catch much Bundesliga action, but I did watch Hannover SV vs. Borrusia this weekend. It was a very entertaining match, but this Barbarez character really annoyed me. He complained about everything and struck me as the biggest whiner I've ever seen. Does this retard always play in the same fashion or was this just a blip on the radar. Also I was surprised that Borrusia are 12th in the table after having watched them. They seem to have ample talent, I wouldn't be surprised to see them turn things around quckly.

Barbarez is a bit of a hothead, which is what you observed on Saturday. Earlier in his career, I believe he had some significant disciplinary issues, but he has seemed to have toned it down as of late. Otherwise, he's too slow and too physically unprepossesing to be an elite player, but is a dangerous goal scorer nonetheless by virtue of what appears to be a top-notch soccer brain, very good skills, and a well-honed finisher's instinct. Interestingly, he is supposedly playing defender now for his country (Bosnia) (but consider the source--Allen Hopkins--too).

He's playing for Hamburg. Just wanting to make sure that you don't have any undeserved bad feelings towards Hannover.

Hamburg played Borussia Dortmund and Hannover against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Whatcha talkin bout, Sergej is a superb player, former league top-scorer, and the most influential player in HSV’s rise after the sacking of Toppmoeller.

And yes he did play sweeper for Bosnia a couple of times.

He's getting up there in age though; I think Lauth and Takahara is the best combo.

Barabarez is great. Former Hansa player. That diving and complaining is getting annoying more and more. There should be some actions against this. Its not only Barbarez.

You know what the Bundesliga's real problem is? The constant fouls. More than any other league, the game is broken up repeatedly by uncalled-for fouls. In the rules, a foul from behind is a red card. That happened to Rosicky this game, and it wasn't even a yellow. You don't see many long runs with the ball in the Bundesliga, mostly because there is no penalty for bringing down someone in most cases. The referees need to start cracking down on petty fouls. Then we will have more entertaining games.

Anyway, I don't rate Barbarez very highly. He is very smart and has a physical presence, but isn't the most skilled player, and, as was said before, is slow and sluggish. I would disagree with the point that he was the most influential player since Doll came, but I can't think of anyone who's been better. :D
And maybe it's just because I'm a Werder fan, but does anyone else here hate Daniel van Buyten? Maybe it's just me...

1. Barbarez is not a superb player; a very good player, yes, but not an elite player.

2. Barbarez did lead the BL in scoring, but that was in 2000-01.

3. Barbarez has certainly been a favorite of Doll's, but to call him the most influential player devalues the contributions of Bouhlarouz and van Buyten to the central defense, Beinlinch and, to a lesser extent, Jarolim in midfield, and Lauth (upon his return) in the attack. Honestly, there doesn't appear to be one player who can be called "most influential;" it's been a team effort; but if I had my pick, it would be Bouhlarouz.

Thanks for all the imput, not to stray off of topic here, but why is every other player in the Bundesliga losing their hair? Pretty wierd that there are so many bald guys in one league. I mean look at Serie A as an example? Stam, and di Canio, but who else is thinning?

I have to say I’m a bit biased when it comes to Sergej, because we were born in the same city and he played for Velez.

I just love his style, the smartness and the elegance, and his commitment to his NT.

I do consider him the most influential because attacking players are more important than defenders.

Keith's Response: Barbarez is a lot of GOOD things, but "elegant" certainly isn't one of them! I loved him when he played for Borussia Dortmund and rooted for him every time I saw him afterwards until that despicable display of poor sportsmanship he showed against Dortmund this past Sunday.

I think one of Dortmund's worst player mistakes was the way they treated Barbarez.

I'm happy Sergej is still doing well. I just wish he'd cut down on the BS.
