Just wondering if those ,calling for Gilberto's Head last year during last seasons record breaking run still think that Gilberto should not be on the team,he might not be the most flashy or most explosive player on the team but looks like he provides a solid balance between the defense and the midfield. he is Arsenals water carrier, you don't notice how Gilberto is playing untill he misplaces a pass or just can't finish. For the most part he is not noticeable throughout the game, but looks like he does his job well. It's funny how Gilberto is now appreciated more when he has barely kicked a ball this season yet was chastized most last season when Arsenal were playing their best football.

Gilberto plays a crucial role for Arsenal. He breaks up opposition attacks, defends well on set pieces, is an aerial threat, protects the back four, allows Vieira to get forward (not to mention that Pat doesn't look the same player without him around). The only thing he lacks is finishing, but lets be honest we don't need him to do that as well. I also think that Gil and Cesc were our best central mid pairing by far this year, we had a great start with those two holding it down. Hopefully he's back soon and back to fitness, we will need him if we intend to win the FA cup.

I don't know if you hang out in this forum often but few people disagree with your comments. In fact most here have been lamenting Gilberto's loss all season as we know his value.

I agree, but would also add that Gilberto's passing is suspect at times. All in all though, he has probably been missed more than any other injured player this season.

Well... I think he's second to Injured Sol Campbell, but Gilberto runs him close.

I'd have to say that last year people were really up on Edu and down on Gilberto for the most part. I like Gilberto, he played a big part in the success of the team. I know I was down on him for some of his performances last year, but still he's been a strong player and I'd personally like to see him in there instead of Flamini.

Well for the most part last season, there was a Gilberto must go chorus around this forum and some were quite vocal about his performances. What amuses me is how most people have realized how important Gilberto is without him kicking a ball for the most part of the season, than last season. This kind of shows how good a job he did and how important he is to Arsenal.

That is rubbish. There was certainly a vocal contingent around here that wanted Edu to start in front of him but I don't recall a "Gilberto must go" groundswell. Most people recognized his value defensively.

Ok....Edu, I love. Gilberto, I like, we need them both. But can't have Gilberto running around the pitch at half speed with a bad back. I just don't see Gilberto coming back from his injury to 100%....back injuries are NO JOKE!

Horse analogy time..
1st you race 'em
Then you stud 'em
then take 'em out back and POW!

Call Gilberto, Mr. Gluestick.

Do you think, maybe, Wenger should give him a chance and see if he recovers before ringing Elmers?

Well in the thread that IORP copied for us today....I only saw one person's comments that could be interpreted as saying "get rid of him." In fact, most of the posts in that thread acknowledge Gilberto's defensive value...mine included.

Perhaps there was another thread where there was some serious Gilberto bashing....but I don't recall it and it's not in the thread IORP linked.

I think you're both on either side of the truth. From what I remember there were a few people who liked Gilberto but most were saying he was inferior to Edu and that Edu should be the starter. I don't remember anyone saying we should actualy sell Gilberto, but I don't remember many people saying they'd prefer him to Edu either. It never reached the level of the anti-Wiltord movement and was usually just a side-bar to other threads.

It would be interesting if we could find a way to put multiple polls in the same thread and have it stickied so posters could see how the board's opinions change over time.

I am a big Edu fan and I remain so. I appreciate Gilberto's contribution, but I still don't rate Gilberto's absence as being so crucial to our slightly disappointing year. We have had all kinds of injuries and defensive failures.

We sure as hell miss Gil . . . BUT last year we had Gil and Edu, this year we have neither. Its had to say how we'd feel about Gil if Edu was fully fit all this year. Edu picked a bad time to be injured, for future value anyway.

Gilberto seems to get most of the conversation props this year as we search for reasons why we can defend set pieces, and look at the midfield and see 5'7 in players where we used to have a more athletic 6'3 player.
