I started a new game in FM2009 using this tactic from a dude...and i've won all 15 games so far with Benfica.

Buying Srna and Salihamidzic added the so much needed depth and quality in the defensive wings. So, right now this team is really impressive when in full strenght.Srna is insane. He's probably the best right-back in the game, all things considered - Daniel Alves might be a tad better, but it's nearly impossible to get him to leave Barcelona.

Playing with Liverpool, I bought Davide Santon for 12 million pounds and Ive already got Insua playing at LB in 2nd season so I reckon im ok for the next 5 years at least.

Srna and Maggio are both great RB's but both are very expensive, while Dani Alves and Maicon would be almost impossible to pry away from Barca and Inter.

It's very well worth the money though.
27 assists and 5 goals in his best season so far.

Btw, it's just me or in this version less wonderkids are spawned?...

I'm lucky enough to be playing Napoli, so I started with Maggio. :D

*sigh* I wish people would test their tactics in multiple leagues before posting them to the Internet claiming that they work wonders. I've seen way too many tactics that do perfectly well against the orthodox 442's that you see in the Premier League but will get you absolutely slaughtered in the Serie A.

Btw, my tactic seems to work perfectly against all kind of teams, italian ones included.

Out of 4 seasons, I won 2 league titles (domestic cups are non-important to the board but i've managed to win 4 playing B teams).
I went as far as going to the semi-finals, narrowly losing at the last minute against Arsenal.

BUT, this season I decided to be more attentive to each match and especially teamtalk and I haven't lost a single game yet.
In a group with Juventus, Arsenal and Wisla I ended 1st with only a away draw in the "vecha signora" stadium as a minor setback.

These are quite good accomplishments considering how average was the depth of the squad when I first started.
Obviously I've been improving that aspect:

Gks: Ochoa | Adán | B. Castro

Dfs: Srna | M. Pereira | I. Marcano | D. Luiz | Sídnei | M. Vitor | Kolarov | Antunes

Mds: Capoué | Katsouranis | R. Amorim | F. Adu | Dí Maria

Wgs: Rakitic | Drenthe | U. Figueredo | C. Grenier | F. Coentrão

Fws: Cardozo | Diogo | P. Collazo | Coutinho | Mantorras

--------------------------Ochoa---------------------------

Srna----------D. Luiz----------I. Marcano---------Kolarov

-----------------------Capoué--------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------

U. Figueredo-----------F. Adu------------------Rakitic

---------------Cardozo--------Diogo------------------------

Ok...prolly not world class on paper but in the game it's a very good squad.

It becomes excellent once I throw out the excess of players (not referred here) and sign a few players on a free transfer like Jávier Gomez Fernandez, Axel Witsel, Yago or Gianni Zuiverloon.
Prolly sell Rakitic that is wanted by many and look out for good national players (to replace guys like Amorim, M. Pereira or Katsouranis that is too old).

So having a top team is important so that it can be efficient at all levels.
Against italian teams I often imitate their poisonous counter-attack method by simply lowering the defensive line in away matches.

Anyone interested, just let me know.

Suggestion: Always be attentive to players when expiring contract. That's how I signed Drenthe, Rakitic, Coutinho (quite underrated kid) and a few others. Including Ibrahim Affelay which I've heard wonders about but was ok (10 assists and 5 goals) for me so I sold him for 13,5 million euros at the end of the season.
And that kinda explains how I get players like Ochoa, Kolarov, Diogo or Figueredo in return :D

I've been convinced for years now that SI's head researcher for Italy supports AS Roma. They've been consistently overpowered since 00/01.

Nice to see someone else noticed it.
They're a constant presence in the CL final eight.

Btw, I finnaly won the Champions League defeating Juventus 3 - 2 :D

I'm in the mid next season and my team just keeps getting better.
18 wins in a row, new record for me.

Wow...I thought it was just a bit of luck for them...I beat Roma 3-0 in the CL final after Chelsea and Man Utd were knocked out of the quarter's in Roma's side of the draw.

Arsenal, Atletico and Roma were the 3 semi-finalists in my first season...wtf?

I cant believe how lucky Ive been in the CL...last season I managed to get passed Barca in the quarters with a late away goal and this season, I got through the quarters against Man Utd with a 1-0 home win then a 2-1 loss, with another lucky goal in the 82nd minute. Im blessed :)

Also...I dont know how everyone else is going with this but I have managed to beat Arsenal once, towards the end of the 2009/10 season in the league. Other than that, I have scraped a few draws and lost a few.

Does anyone get the feeling that they've been overrated as well?

Does anyone get the feeling that they've been overrated as well? The thing is, Arsenal's individual player stats seem more or less accurate (which is not necessarily the case with Roma). I think it's due to tactics - there's a third-party program that lets you import the ones the AI uses, and taking a look at them can be quite revelatory. Mourinho's 4-1-2-2-1, Barcelona's 4-2-3-1, etc are a cut above the regular tactics you see employed by the AI, and Wenger's 4-4-2 is easily the best 4-4-2 in the game.

But yeah, Arsenal are a bitch, and nearly impossible to beat at the Emirates. I just got drawn against them for the Champions' League quarterfinals in my Napoli game, and thought 'ah, shit' when I saw the fixture. I guess it was the game's way of punishing me for cruising past Spartak Moscow in the round of 16.

At least game balance isn't as skewed as it was during the last few purely text-based versions. 00/01 and 01/02 were really unbalanced - the majority of Spanish clubs, especially Real Madrid, were inexcusably weak despite their Champions' League dominance, with the only notable exception being Barcelona, who were world-beaters. Average Serie A sides were rated way too highly; it was not at all uncommon to see Fiorentina win the Champions' League.

The away leg was hell - I had to be stereotypically Italian and catenaccio them to death.

I always thought that was strange. Even back in FM2006 I was losing to Arsenal when my Hannover side easily beat ManU and Inter Milan. I think I never managed to get anything more than a draw from the handful of times I played against Arsenal in the CL.

For some reason, Arsene Wenger is unbeatable despite only having a Tactical Knowledge of 13.

Strange, in mine, every CL season Fiorentina snatches a seed from Inter, Roma or AC Milan and achieve the knockout rounds.
Overrated.

Oh, it might just be the natural competitiveness of my league but Sporting is ranked 4th (I'm 5th) in Europe so far.
They're quite tough to beat and managed to win 3 - 1 in Bernabéu to reach the CL semi-finals.
Is it just me?

I do think Arsenal are very strong, lost against them by 2 -1 in the European Super Cup but put up a good fight.
Overall I have the hand. 2 V | 4 D | 1 L .
Never managed to win in their stadium though.

Just got the game today, never played football manager before. Whenever I go to tactics and press control to change something, it's like my mac is stuck on control and I can't do anything at all. when i press anything i get a list of various options, depending on what screen i'm on. when i go to transfers and press anything, I see the following: make an offer, get scout report, add to short list, etc. It's incredibly frustrating, I just want to play.
