As a complete neophyte, can someone please explain to me the technology available to put into DVD (or VCD , who knows) something contained in a VCR/VHS tape? Thanks//// Oh, yeah, and the cheaper the better... :)

The simplest:

Otherwise, get a capture card (~$50 on the low end) and DVD burner ($50-100 should do) for your computer.

That link is great thank you... prices seem to have lowered from where they were at the beginning....
For a clueless person like myself : what is a capture card?

A "capture card" is a card for your computer (usually PCI) that will allow you to convert video, say from a VCR, into a digital video file on your hard drive (aka "capturing"). Some capture cards have little encoders on them that will spit out compressed video, others only provide a raw stream that some piece of software will have to either compress on the fly, or write to disc for non-realtime compression (usually much better in quality, especially on a slower/older machine).

Getting one of those all-in-one burners is super-easy. Getting a capture card and DVD burner for your PC is super-flexible, but more difficult (and time consuming) to use. If you think you might like to get into something more sophisticated than simply dumping VHS to DVD (like editing, authoring your own menus, etc) then get the capture card and DVD burner for your PC. There are lots of sites (www.videohelp.com is my favorite) with step-by-step tutorials for everything you could ever want to do that make it very easy to learn.

what's the deal i keep hearing about bittorrent being dead then? I used to download soccer stuff, when i had my old PC...... but a few friends tell me "it's dead" Is it really? Have there been changes law-wise? Or is there simply less sites from which to take stuff.... Back then, i used suprnova....(i know, pretty ancient) ..So what's out there nowadays?

Most of the big sites have shut down, but there's a lot of smaller sites that are good, that specialize in one category.
