CHAPTER V: SOCCER:
Major League Soccer reported some gains in 2002, as interest in soccer worldwide was spurred by the televising of World Cup matches. In his Aug. 2, 2002 "State of the League" address, MLS Commissioner Don Garber said the league had seen a 20% jump in ratings since the end of the 2002 World Cup and expected that trend to continue for the remainder of the 2002 season. In addition to national TV exposure on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2, over 90% of MLS games are shown locally on live television, giving MLS significant TV coverage.

according to this MLS mid-day ratings aren't that far behind MLB playoff ratings, that gives me some hope. MLB mid-day ratings of course, but how often does MLS have a prime time game on a major network, never.

All of this is positive for soccer, especially since ratings for all other major sports are down. If I were a major advertiser, I would sure want to hitch my brand to anything going up, preferable to anything going down.
Regardless of market size, obviously the other major sports have image problems as evinced by their ratings woes.
I hope the league is making this pitch to advertisers and for future broadcast rights.
Also, soccer is perfectly placed for the current 'sportstyle' trend that is pushing Puma to record sales and has Nike scrambling to figure out what they have done wrong...

It wouldn't have anything to do with Puma's gear being better quality? Puma's shoes actually fit and they wear better, too. Not to mention the Euro-appeal.

This seems like a very solid number to me. You can actually show this number to advertisers and they might notice, can't you?
Maybe for next year's playoffs they'll remember this number (if it's as good as I think it is).

.264 is a pretty good rating for MLS considering they have ZERO commercials hyping the game.
Too bad more games aren't being shown. What is on ESPN2 on Wednesdays anyhow these days? Baseball?

Last Wednesday I think the US Women's National Team was on.
Tomorrow, there seems to be some "filler" and then a late NHL game.

Andy
It was the USA-Australia women's match.
I don't understand why ESPN and/or Rob Stone couldn't have talked about the MLS games going on the same night. I didn't see any MLS mention on the ticker or any reference to the MLS playoffs during the game. I guess ESPN figured there is no cross-over between fans of the women's game and MLS.
