Watched the Schalke/Bayern game on Sunday. First time I've seen Guerrero play. Wasn't terribly impressed, but that's not to say he's not going to be a very good player. What struck me, though, is that he whined to the referee at every single opportunity. It started in the first few minutes, when he was demanding a yellow card for a little push in the run of play. Clearly, he has learned well at the knee of Ballack and the other Bayern whiners who apparently think it is their god-given right as Bayern players to have every single call go their way and voice their displeasure if it doesn't. At the very end of the game, when he was bundled to the ground in the box, he might have had a chance of getting that call if he didn't complain every time a Schalke defender so much as dared to defend.

Well consider this buddy, in a game of that magnitude, of that importance the calls should be fair shouldn't they? Is a bad ref decision really worth costing a team the championship? I think its safe to say that a bad call gave Shalke the three points. Now, why call what wasn't a foul and not call what actually was a penalty. I agree that JPG was complaining from the start, but that was no dive late on in the game.

Well, consider this buddy, you missed my point entirely. I didn't say Guerrero dove--to the contrary, I said he was "bundled to the ground." Had he not been complaining the entire game, the referee might have been more inclined to view that encounter in a manner favorable to Bayern. But having been harangued the whole game, the referee likely thought it was a bit of embellishment by a guy who had been begging for calls the whole 90 and whose credibility on such matters had been correspondingly diminished. FWIW, I would have never called that a penalty, but I would not have disagreed if it was called a penalty.

Not a bad call give Schalke three points. The better team get the three points.
And absolutely deserved.
The only problem for Munich is they cant`t lose like men.
Penalty kick for sinking down after a little touch in the box, are you joking?
Yellow card for Guerrero for the try to get a PK.
Or why the Referee pipes the final whistle after 91 minutes.
There was no reason to play longer.
But Munich think they get every game an extra time of minimum 5 minutes when they are not in front.
The Referee pipes well.

Not that I agree with the whining, but do you honestly believe this is solely a "Bayern" issue?

Of course not, but I was really struck by how much Bayern complained from the opening whistle, Ballack, Guerrero and Pizarro being the worst offenders (perhaps I should not have painted with such a broad brush--Kahn was remarkably restrained, DeMichelis, Deisler, Sagnol, Lizarazu, Kovac all seemed to want to play the game). Ballack is just terrible--I never remember him doing this with Leverkusen. I should point out that while I think their domination is bad for the BL and I was hoping for a Schalke win, I'm not a Bayern hater and routinely root for them in Euro competition. So my comments are not those of someone with a pathological dislike for the Bavarians. Rather, they are relatively neutral observations from someone who hasn't seen a Bayern game in since early fall.

I didn't think you were, but just wanted to make sure ;)
I did not get to see the game -so I am not going to try and rebuke you. You are probably right. The only reason Ballack may be complaining is that he is pretty much the field player captain. Kahn can't go running out everytime. Though that would be quite a site :p
Hey- I am a Bayern fan, but not a big fan of the overcomplaining as well.

I don`t understand the discussion, Munich was the worster team at this evening, that's all. They lose cause they couldn`t win, simply and easy.

I don't think we were talking about who was better or worse. We were talking about how some players like to whine to the ref.

I was thinking the same thing. I noticed his terrible grammar too. Usually he's much better at English...and not so snappy/belligerent. Remember kids: don't drink and post on bigsoccer.com message boards.

It doesn't matter, thats not what the referee is supposed to do, a foul is a foul and a ref can't NOT call a real foul based on the fact that one player has been calling for one all game.

That's a bit naive. As I am sure you know, referees tend to be loathe to call penalties. Little stuff that might be a foul from 18 to 18 is routinely discounted inside the penalty box. In other words, something that might be a foul outside the penalty area will almost never be called a foul inside the penalty area. A foul is not "black and white" (as you suggest with your "a foul is a foul" comment) but rather, varying shades of gray (if fouls were black and white, there would be far fewer refereeing controversies, right?). My point, which I think is entirely valid, is a referee might see a bit more gray than black in an incident where the player has been begging for fouls the whole game, or where the player dove earlier in the game, or where the player has a reputation for diving, etc. My suggestion (and it's just that, a suggestion) is that you view soccer specifically, and professional sports generally, and life even more generally, as variable, and not as a set of absolutes.
Totally random Merte fact I:
In just read that Mertesacker only earns 150.000 €, even the backup-goalie gets more. Including all bonuses he can earn 300.000 € maximum.
Well, he doesn't really need much money anyway, he's still living with his family and doesn't get out much.
Totally random Merte fact II:
At every 96 homegame a player can chose a song that will played during warm-up. Mertesacker did chose Bob Marley - Jammin'.
De Guzman chose De la Soul, can't remember the other songs??

I know I'm very late on this thread, but I have to say I completely agree with PileD here. Bayern didn't lose that match because of any bad call or non-call. Bayern lost that match because Schalke were the better team that day. Nothing more, nothing less.
BTW, on the "Bayern Whiners" comment? I completely agree. Nobody cries louder than "Der Munchener" when things don't go their way. NOBODY!
As much as things have been whistled Bayern's way over the years, PileD put it correctly.
"They can't lose like men"
And on Ballack? He didn't learn to whine at Bayern. He's always been a big freakin' whiner. He just got "loud" at Bayern.......

Mainz recently beat a top team at home, and at the end the players sat down while the fans were chanting, and all of the sudden they got up, and started jumping up and down clapping.
What kind of chant was that, and is there a video to it?
