JOINING IN: The numbers in Colorado Springs will remain the same, as Reading FC midfielder Bobby Convey has been summoned to camp and will arrive tomorrow evening. Convey will be making his first trip with the national team in 2005, having made nine appearances and seven starts last year. Convey is the first of what is expected to be several European-based players added to the roster in advance of the upcoming qualifiers against Mexico and Guatemala.
Its good for Convey to get away from his Reading situation for a little and get in a game this weekend. It is also nice to have someone who can play LB in camp

He's useless.
Glass houses and all.
This had to have been with Reading's ok. He'll miss a pair of league games---I guess he could hop on a plane if half the midfield gets hurts mid-week.

Yeah, this is the way to reward him and to send the message to the players about club performance earning a call-up!

I mean, has he seen any time this year? Or is he just playing reserve matches? Why would he be called into camp for 1 of the biggest qualifiers? Makes no sense to me.

He's useless.
That seems a bit harsh. I'm not a big Convey fan, but I am cautiously hopeful that one day he may live up to his potential. He certainly can't be worse than Albright at LB, and maybe he gets some time in the midfield before the other Euros appear.

Three guesses -
1) Bruce is engaging in a rescue mission
2) Bobby will help with camp training
3) We are weak at left back & Arena might actually pick Bobby one of these games
Pick any, all, or none of the above. I'm going with all. If Arena could select Richie Williams against Brazil, he could certainly take Bobby Convey for a WC qualifier.

He's useless because he's a strolling little snot. I'm tellin' ya, he's a waste.

Didn't Bruce basically perform a similar rescue on Eddie Lewis in the run up to World Cup 2002?

Convey brings in two of the most rested legs in world football. Those can only be considered prime assets in the 5000 feet altitude and 140 degree heat of Mexico City....
(Am I close??)

Well, one of Williams' virtues was that he could carry out a simple assignment. I've always argued that players in the dmid spot can be faceless worker ants. Convey would never deign to do such dirty work. And he can't even play left back. Convey is terrible.

A bit of a reach but not bad. I'd definitely be lighting candles if Bruce trotted his stuck-up little ass on to the field at Azteca.
He wouldn't have a clue how to handle it, though.

Seems to me that Convey's hate is growing everyday, i don't understand in what fact and why ?, i think he is a good player, i've seen him play live and on tv, and he is worth to be called up.

They're ok with it because they have no plans to play him.

My problem with this is that is just reinforces the message to Convey that he doesn't have to earn it.
Basically, between leaving Bradenton when he was 16 and joining Reading at 21, he never had to earn playing time. He was penciled in as a starter in MLS almost from the get-go and then kept getting call-ups to the national team, more because he was young and playing in MLS than because he was playing well.
He didn't play badly for the US but he never played great yet he kept getting called back in. And, it's not like his play for the US raised the level of his MLS game, any. Yet the call-ups kept coming.
Now, he's fighting for playing time and not getting any and yet he's getting called in, again. This just sends the message to Convey that he doesn't have to earn it and with that message sent, what incentive does he have to fight through this?
I thought - and still think - that the Reading benching will be good for Convey as it forces him to really get stuck-in and earn his minutes and that will benefit him long term after being coddled by DC United and Bruce. But that process gets undermined if he's still getting caps for the national team despite not playing for a second-tier team.

CONVEY HATER!! :D
Seriously, Sandon, I agree with you entirely. IMO, this does little to support Arena's credibility with the players. How can he tell players, "Work hard with your club, I'll be watching you?" At the same time, how can the players take him at his word? PLayers that are starting regularly, and playing well [but are not included in the national teams] have to be wondering, "WTF do I have to do to get a chance?"
Including players that aren't regularly included in their clubs' first-teams is also no way to promote team unity...

I suspect if you're looking for attacking options from left abck, convey is the best choice.
I do suspect convey, given a half decent camp would be the attacking left abck against guatemala.
Don't believe he plays against mexico.
those with a good memory should recollect his service setting up the first goal in foxboro against el salvador...
until some other attacking option at left back emerges. convey is the best of a limited attacking option
