What does everyone think about young jose antonio reyes' future with the club? I think he will be sold, BUT, i personally do not want it to happen. He is a perfect replacement for super bob, IMO. Not as a striker, but playing in the midfield. I understand the animosity to him just now, but keep in mind his age and adjustment to the english game. He is also versatile enough that he can be used, in emergency situations, at striker.

Is he gone in the summer?
i hope not~

He's the first member of the squad that I wouldn't mind to see go someplace else, as long as we find a suitable replacement, which shouldn't be too difficult. He's been dreadful since November, and I don't think his teammates are too keen on him wasting a half dozen opportunites day in day out.

to quote Hawk Harrelson: "he gawn!"

sell him to a Spanish club, get the cash money, buy someone else.

he doesn't seem to be playing with any enthusiasm.

i think if we could turn the funds for JAR into a world class CB, then i would do a deal.. not some prospect though, the real deal.

I completely agree with Phishy in that I don't want him sold in the summer. However, giving Wenger an extra 20-25 million would do wonders for our squad. We would have a gaping hole at left mid though with Pires tiring and about to retire.

My biggest frustration with Reyes is that he's not been the replacement for Bergkamp. Reyes seems most comfortable playing Pires' role, and I've resisted him there because I think Pires is fine. But the one thing I've wanted for this team is someone who can come off the bench and give us instant offense. A spark really, like Ole Gunnar Skolsjaer for Man Utd and more recently Joe Cole for Chelsea. I think Pires can do that. I'd hoped that as he'd aged, Bergie could do that, but it's just not in him. So, I'm thinking Pires. Wenger doesn't do as well as some other coaches mixing and juggling lineups, and maybe Reyes has had some trouble playing on Wenger's weakness. So, I want to keep Reyes, give him the starting role and letting him play for 60 minutes with Pires coming in and getting a good run at that point.

We still need a stiker to replace Bergkamp. That's where we buy one, and I'm OK with a stop-gap kind of guy who can play while we continue to develop van Persie, Quincy, Lupoli and Bentley.

We need a CB, a RB and a keeper. Senderos, while playing well lately, has been injury prone and Sol worries me (he's been out three times this year and each time it's taking longer for him to return than originally expected). A keeper is going to be expensive since Man Utd's need is as dire as ours.

Even if we get a ton of money for Reyes, we're still faced with needed to find a successor to Pires. I'm for giving Reyes another year.

He has to be gone, he's not settled, his play is outside of the team though full of outstanding Individual goals and highlights and he's already done upset Herny the talisman.
I thought it was nutso at the time and told my life long Arsenal fan father that he just wouldn't make it in this league and the physical side really seems to be what's holding back him from becoming a great player here.
I hope we can get back most of our cash for him but some sort of Real & Owen swap deal and some cash would be ok. Another season would just be fooling both parties and simply be a hiding to nothing. He's a talented player but not cut out for this league.

Arsene needs to stop buying these Winger/Forward players and just buying players to do the one position.

It's an interesting comparison when you see Cesc and Reyes play, with Cesc he seems part of the team, bought into the ver fabric of the Arsenal philosophy but with Reyes it just seems like it's him, with the ball and it always seems so seperate from the team.

Only Arsene's pride could stop this happening, not wanting to give up on a young kid but I don't see how he's ever going to make in the red and white.

I'm with you, phishster. Give him one more year to see if he can settle in. The boy has loads of talent and just needs to figure out how to make it mesh with the rest of the squad. Importantly, we need another player that can run at defenders with the ball besides Henry. Reyes IS that player. If he is sold then Wenger better get someone like SWP to replace him....otherwise we'll be seeing more of "crowd the midfield...deny Henry the ball because no one else can break you down".....from our opponents. I realize this is already being done to some effect....but a player like Reyes once he gets it together (combined with Titi) can be the key to punishing such tactics.

Lets see, a few years ago people said the same thing about a Robert Pires, and how people 4get How whenever Henrys name was mentioned they would stick his price tag just to drive thier point, well Reyes might not be having a good season but this is his first full season with the gunners and what he has done so far is more than good enough for a young spanish lad and who do we expect to fill Pires role better than Reyes,,,, Patience

Considering the way he's played this year I'd be shocked if anyone offered anything close to what we are paying for him. I don't think the club want to take a bath on their most expensive purchase ever.

I think Reyes is going to be around for a while. Fans want instant gratification but managers and directors have to be patient with talent like this because the rewards of developing it properly are simply too great to ignore.

True, people keep saying that we could sell Reyes for around 20 million. Based on what performances? I'm still not sure what we paid for him but i would be surprised if we got an offer of even 15 million for him. I would like to see how he does the rest of this year and next, but the fact is, if he really wants to go back to Spain, he probably will.

It really is up to him. If he wants to go and we get a decent offer, Wenger won't stand in his way, as he has done with other players who wanted out in the past. However, if he's happy at the club and is committed to learning his trade here, then I say keep him. He has the talent, he just needs to learn that you don't need to try and beat your man every single time. Let the ball do the work!

I know a lot of people on this board think Reyes will become Super Bob's successor, but I just don't see that happening unless we start incorporating aerial crosses into our game. Reyes has a wonderful left foot which I feel goes to waste out left. Consider the way Bobby plays. He cuts in from the wing which gives him a great angle for a curling shot. Reyes would be doing the same on the on the other side (i.e. Chelsea FA Cup last year, ok that didnt curl but you get the picture). He scored goals at the beginning of the season playing as a forward coming in from the right side. The community shield comes to mind as well. The problem is he is used to playing out left from Spain and delivering crosses with that left foot. Another problem arises when he drifts to the left as a forward because he gets in Henry's way. Plus, for now there is just no beating the Ash/Bob/Titi triangle. I thought we looked a hundred times more likely to score when Bob came on against Bayern. So I think Wenger is trying to ccomodate Reyes by playing him left wing, but if he's not going to play up front, or we can't develop a crossing game, then I don't see a regular place for him in the team. Think about if we had Reyes out left, SWP out right, and RVP and TH14 up front, that would be an extremely versatile attack indeed. Play it on the deck, but with a big crossing threat as well, since this lineup could do both, and there's our plan B. I'm not sure what would happen with Freddie and Bob, but Bob could be our super sub for the last few years of his career. Freddie could figure as well, but I don't know how happy he would be sharing PT with SWP. But that would give us unbelievable strength in depth, and with a tougher defense, we would challenge for everything.

Nowadays it seems like everyone is playing the "4-3-3" formation. Barcelona, Chelsea, Man U and now even Juventus. I think Reyes would be perfect in this type of postion. He could play on the Right wing and cut in to take shots with his left foot. I would also rather have Reyes then Michel Owen, Reyes is younger and more versitile. I cant wait until the summer, Im expecting big things in the transfer window. :D

His crossing will be fine on the left if he could ever produce any. Reyes pooped back in October after his excellent start. Now, he's consistently underperforming, and he's not connecting passes to his teammates. Case in point: Ljungberg would have only had to dink one home in Munich had Reyes put the ball across goal instead of trying to squeeze a near-post blast past one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time.

Again, aerial crosses will be fine. Van Persie and Gilberto, and possibly Bentley will all be guys looking to get on the end of those.

"The head is for thinking," say the french. ;)

And if Reyes begins to use his, he'll be fine at Arsenal. Keep him around if he'll stay.

I hope he stays around, and not just because I have a Reyes jersey.

Selling him probably doesn't make much sense, as several people pointed out here since he hasn't been playing well. I don't really see his value falling too much if he has a season next year like the one he's having this year since he'll still be a young speedy guy with potential, which is all they have to base his value on now. I think he looked pretty good today against Bolton. Ran hard, as usual, didn't get knocked down all the time, took a couple of good shots, and linked up well with his teammates for his best opportunity that Jaaskelainen stopped with his foot.

Totally agree. Glad someone mentioned the bolton game today had a great game and the commentator said during the game on BBC according to the board and the important people who decides the players's fate have come out and said whatever has been said in the papers Reyes is staying.

Another thing stated by the commentators during the game on BBC was he is young, has only had a full season with us and is a great talent.

I don't know whether you guys remember but when Thierry first came to us he had an awful season worse than Reyes has had this season then it all came good for him. If the best striker in the premiership can have a bad first season then surely Reyes should be able to as well.

I say Keep him.

 That is rubbish.....Henry didn't score for a couple of months, ran up a few blind alleys, ran the ball out of play and general looked short for the first few months at the club, but he didn't stop scoring after he notched his first against Southampton and ended the season with 19 goals. He had far from an awful season and it was considerably better than Reyes' this year, Henry never stunk up the place quite as bad as Reyes has at times. Who if you remember has now been at the club for over a year, in comparison to Henry who hadn't even trained with us during pre-season.

We should keep Reyes though.
