So, after capping for new guys last night, by my count, Arena has now used exactly 100 players since he took over. (My stats could be off, but I don't think so.)

Of those 100, 88 are field players, the other 12 goalkeepers. This includes giving 63 players their first caps.

Chris Armas, despite not playing much for the US the past two years, has played the most minutes and started the most games while Brian McBride and Eddie Lewis have played the most games under Arena. McBride is the leading goal-scorer of the "Arena Era" while Lewis and Landon Donovan are tied for most assists. Frankie Hejduk has the most yellow cards.

In the nets, Kasey Keller has played the most games and has the lowest GAA of any of the GKs Arena has used more than three times.

Here is the 100 players Arena has used, listed in order of minutes played UNDER ARENA, with goals, assists, yellows and reds.

Great work, Sandon. It's probably good that you're getting this started now because the Gold Cup, summer friendlies, and the last few WCQ games are probably going to add a couple dozen more names to the list. Depth is a wonderful thing.

Donovan & Bease have a crazy high number of caps for their age. Very impressive.

I know FIFA tracks the number of caps over the course of a career - I wonder it there's an all-time record for most caps before your 25th birthday. Because Donovan could be in the 70s or 80s by then.

Depth is a wonderful thing.Yeah, some of the names at the bottom of the list are pretty damn good players and you could win a lot of games with those guys, but they happen to behind some better players so some of them won't get many more minutes with the nats.

And, I agree that the depth is pretty impressive and that is this list will only grow. My all-uncapped XI, AS OF TODAY, is as follows:

--------------------------------A. Brown
-------Russell-------------DeMerit------Conrad-------Burciaga

----------------------------------Clark
-------------------Philipakos---------------------Mapp
----------------------------------Magee
-----------------------Arnaud-------------J. Johnson

I expect this list to change as we get a look at more rookies and other young players this MLS season.

But, I gotta figure that whatever it is, Donovan would have to be pretty close to it. I mean, between now and the World Cup, he should get about 18 more caps, at least. That would have him pushing 80 caps by next summer when he'll be just 24 so he'd have almost another year to get more caps before his 25th birthday. Really is amazing.

Damn. Especially when you look back at all the friendlies that were played pre-MLS. Donovan's numbers surpass many of those players who I now think of as having padded caps numbers.

Amazing.

First off, thanks to Dark Knight for putting the chart in a much more readable text form. Certainly makes it easier to take all the info in.

Second, I made a slight error in my data with Friedel and Keller. Each have given up one more goal than I originally posted.

Keller has given up 28 goals under Arena and his Bruce Era GAA is 0.68.
Friedel has given up 23 goals under Arena and his Bruce Era GAA is 0.96.

(DK, if you want to edit that into the chart, feel free.)

Sorry about the mistake, I didn't catch it till I cross-checked some totals this afternoon. I should have done that before I posted.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the above represents one game - Namely the pre-Confed Cup game in 2003 vs New Zealand.

I think we can find it in our hearts to forgive you...

Thanks for the research.... I wouldn't have guessed Kirovski would have played so many minutes under Arena. I also would have thought Convey would have played more minutes than a lot of the players in front of him. The list really brings home the fact that Arena has been running this squad for 7 years now (and doing a great job of it IMO)....

In the "where are they now" category...

Henry Gutierrez?

Wow, were we thin in central midfield back then. If I remember correctly, Gutierrez put together a handful of good matches on a bad Fusion team, and Arena immediately capped him.

Where's Chad McCarty now? I was always surprised he never really made it in MLS.

I know... to think that US Soccer survived Taylor Twellman or Edson Buddle not getting another cap instead of ol' Wolyninho.

When did Billy Walsh play a minute?9/8/99 in a friendly @Jamaica that ended 2-2.

Walsh was one of several players to get his first cap that day, joining an illustrious list that includes Kevin Hartman, the aforementioned Chd McCarty and Henry Gutierrez, Steve Cherundolo, Chris Albright and Josh Wolff.

Here's the lineup.

United States - Zach Thornton (Kevin Hartman, 46), Greg Vanney, Eddie Pope (Chad McCarty 68), Leo Cullen, Steve Cherundolo, Eddie Lewis, Richie Williams (captain), Ben Olsen, Henry Gutierrez (Chris Albright 78), Jason Kreis (Josh Wolff 46, Billy Walsh 90), Brian McBride (Ante Razov 46).

Kreis and Albright got the goals and boy, did the message boards back on ol' AOL Soccer and NAS go nuts talking about how Albright was going to be the next great US forward.

The game was the second of a double-header. In the first game, our U17 team beat their Jamaican counterpats 4-0.

Here's the lineup we fielded for that game:

United States - D.J. Countess, Seth Trembly (Peter Withers 76), Alex Yi (Greg Martin 67), Nelson Akwari, Oguchi Onyewu (Kellen Kalso 79), Bryan Jackson (Justin Detter 84), Kenneth Cutler, Kyle Beckerman (Bobby Convey 59), DaMarcus Beasley, Landon Donovan (Adolfo Gregorio 76), Jordan Cila (Abe Thompson 59).

Interestingly, their are almost as many players from the 17s lineup who have, or will, become fixtures with the national team than the team Arena fielded!

IIRC, Albright soccer on his first TOUCH on the ball. Literally. Someone passed the ball, and he immediately struck it for a goal. No trap, no dribble.
