is transfer basically a trade? who decides on the transfer and when?

so a team doesn't want a player he could just transfer him out to another club?

What about the loan system...a team could just borrow a player and just pay compensation...

we should go borrow ronaldinho

Players have contracts. When a contract ends, the player is free and can go wherever he wants, or expire the contract. When a team wants to buy a player that still has a contract e.g till 2006, they have to talk to his team and negotiate. Basically the other team doesn't have to sell the player when they don't want to. The other team then can not buy the player, they can talk directly to the player and negotiate a contract that starts, when his old one ends. There are also some exceptions. Many players have special clauses in their contracts, e.g that his club must sell him when another club bids a certain amount of money (and the player wants to sign with this club!) or they have to sell him when they get relegated, don't qualify for CL etc. etc.

A contract must not last longer than 5 years (+ options).

Players can only be traded in the transfer period, that lasts from 1.7-31.8 and from 1.1-31.1.

Loans work like normal transfers. The clubs have to agree. A player can be loaned for 6 months up to several years, in England even for a week during the season.

The biggest difference between the European football system and American sports is, that players can't be traded against their will.

I don't know if this is a worldwide ruling or if it only applies to the British leagues, but if a player under the age of 24 is signed by another club in the last six months of his contract (ie a pre-contract agreement) then the new club will have to pay compensation to the old club. That rule was created to help protect some of the clubs that traditionally produced youngsters with a view to selling them on.

Players are free to discuss contracts with new clubs in the final six months of their contract, and they don't have to seek their current employer's permission before doing so like they would have had to do over the rest of their contract.
(example: a player signs a contract in June 2005 valid until June 2007. From January 2007 he would be free to negotiate with any other club for a new contract. Before that date he would have to get permission from his club to talk to another side).
