View Full Version : So what's Moyes up to?

Has he been changing things around at Everton, including his own coaching style? I heard he's become alot less rigid in his demands and relations towards the players since Rooney left. And I also heard recently that he has benched captain Stubs, and that Stubbs might have a difficult time regaining his spot. So is Moyes a tweeker, augmenting his style as the season needs it? Is he like Ranieri, unable to decide on a lineup? Or is he like Bruce Arena, giving his players a clean slate, basically throwing seniority out the window and giving playtime based solely on recent performances?
And why is this forum such a friggin' black hole? Everytime I come in here i hear wind blowing and see tumbleweed rolling around. Maybe you need an off topic thread or something to snag passers-by.

Eh, we like our forum as it is. We say what we gotta say and get on with it. I don't think it's a wasteland... Now six months ago, maybe.

As for Moysie -- Stubbs has been nursing some injuries so I think Davey wanted to rest him. For the most part, our lineup has been quite the same for most of the season. Obviously, injuries change things up a bit.

We have a small squad. I wouldn't class him with Ranieri or Arena. I'd say that he's trying to make the most of what he has. In order to do that, he has to try new things and when he finds something that works, he sticks with it. Stubbs was healthy for Blackburn, but we had such a phenomenal game against Villa that I think he wanted to give those same 11 the chance to do it again.

That's one of the things I like most about Moyes. If you prove to him you can get the job done, he'll put you in the lineup. I expect to see Stubbs back against the RS.

I don't think Moyes has changed his coaching style -- we're just in a different phase of his stay here.

A good manager typically will be a taskmaster in the beginning, but then after a year or two, will ease off a bit once his club plays consistently well.

If a manager fails to ease off as Moyes has done, the players tend to burn out or rebel, and before you know it, you're looking for a new manager.

So what's the next phase with him? Does he have enough money to significantly reinforce his side in the summer market? Will the Everton board give him what he wants, or are they also just a bunch of drunken chimps who will sack him if they become a lower-mid table team again (NUFC)?

He does have the money -- almost all of the Judas money is still in the kitty for him to spend. The thing about Moyes is that he doesn't spend just to spend. He waits until he finds the right player for the team, if he finds anyone at all.

Qualifying for Europe will certainly help our chances of getting some decent players. As it is, I think a lot of players don't want to come to Everton because we're not a "big" club. Europe, and possibly Champions League, will make us all that much more attractive.

Erm, sorry, but I think you're wrong there regarding the Rooney money. The money we receieved up front went to the banks.

I can't go into it right now (have to get to work) but I'll try to pop in later and explain the financial situation as best I can.

Not all of it went to the banks. Some of it was made available for Moysie to strengthen the squad. At least, that was my understanding.

Yes, we HAD some money...then we bought James Beattie.

I received an email that more or less explains the money situation. I won't paste the whole thing here, because it was a private response to a list of people, but I will give you this bit about the Rooney money:

...snip... That of course is why Rooneys sale was a certainty - the Board (and their investment) probably would have gone down with the ship if it hadn't happened.

What I have been struggling to tally is the broad outline of the Clubs debts that Birch discussed and the Annual Accounts adjusted for the Rooney money.

The first ten million Rooney money simply covered the money we'd borrowed from this seasons essential income? Possibly. It would be interesting to know exactly when the 'Basic Award Fund' is received from the PL, because there is every possibility that it, not the Rooney money, cleared the charge. If so, where is the Rooney money? Well of course it still simply replaces that PL money needed to pay the bills.

The biggest difficulty is establishing just how much of the Rooney money we actually received net.

(The bold and italics are mine, by the way.)

I've gotten this from someone who is very close to the situation, so I tend to believe what's said. However, you all may draw your own conclusions! :)

And if you think I'm gonna try and make sense of this all...get to fu *k! I can barely balance my checkbook let alone try to figure out what money is from the PL's Basic Award Fund, the sale of Rooney, Sky or even the fictitious Fortress Sports Fund...where is that money anyway, Bill?

I guess what I'm trying to say is although it would be nice to think we have a bunch of money in the bank just waiting to be spent, because it's more likely that any cash we get will be used to 1) pay the bills, 2) pay the players (get rid of the dead weight, please, and free up some cash!!) and 3) hopefully purchase a couple of players in the summer. For god's sake, we can't have another summer like this last one. Jeez, that was bad.

Sigh....it's a mess any way you look at it.

I think our best hope is that European football and a superb young manager will make us a more likely investment target and we can get rid of Bill this summer. We certainly cannot let ourselves stand still like we did after Moyes' first full season. Whats for sure is we don't have any money at the moment, and over half the already tiny squads' contracts are out in the summer.

Yeah Eurooe would definately be great for player prospects. I want to say that I can't wait to see what Moyes can do with more solid players, but he didn't do so hot with Rooney and Radzki. I think with Beattie and a couple of solid midfielders, Everton could be pretty comfortable, though I'm worried the missing anxiety of them being picked for relegation won't be good for them. The same thing happened to Auburn last year. 2002 we surprised alot of people; they had us #1 at the beginning of next season and we flopped; then this year i didn't buy season tickets, and we went undefeated. go figure.

Radzinski was a prick who wanted out, there was nothing Moyes could do about that. He just brough sour grapes to the team and I'm glad he's gone.

As for Judas... well... I dunno. Seems like the move was good for everyone, to be honest. We got the money we needed and he gets to move on to a bigger club where he can work with some veteran strikers and get something he couldn't get at Everton.

Maybe there will be money for transfers after all.

Theres also been rumors that if Everton reach the Champions League, Moyes will be handed 10M.

Where will this ten mill come from though. The champions league is only worth serious money if you qualify for the group stages, not from the preliminary rounds.

By the way there's a good article about the financial impact of the champions league and potential Bosman departures/ new contracts here

I didn't expect the Champions League to save us, and indeed it could cause as many problems as it helps, but I still think it would get us exposure and recognition that can't be bought. Without those things, we won't be able to attract the kind of player we need to really compete year after year.

This would be so horrible...but if Liverpoop, god forbid, win the CHampions League, they will takeaway our CL spot even if we hold them off for 4th place because Liverpoop would automatically go just by winning. And UEFA stipulates that only 4 teams from England can go through, which would mean Chelsea, Liverpoop, ManU and Arsenal would be the English contingent in the CL.

Hears hoping Liverpool get AC Milan in the next round *wink*

It is a frightening thought, but I don't think they have a chance. Eventually they will have to play Milan, Chelsea and/or Juventus. B-Leverkusen wasn't exactly the ultimate test. Forget it, don't even think it, it's too ghastly and too remote.
