Odvan participated on the backup squad in an itra-squad scrimmage (small field) today and from at least one persons perspective he did not fare well..

He gave up one own goal and also had a few "Agoos type" passes (in reference to his Jamaica blunder one can assume) to boot.. The general comment about Odvan was that he lacking fitness and folded pretty easily under pressure from Moreno, Esky and few other first team regulars..

On a positive note, Moreno, Adu and especially Brian Carroll looked sharp with BC notching two goals, one an upper 90 beauty..

As far as Odvan goes, I think we can chalk it up to a bad day at the office, though admittedly, you don't want to stand out negatively when on trial.

Especially on Day One. :(

Yeah. That wasn't the report I hoped to read.

I am not as worried as others about it if he is just coming in without a real pre-season to get into shape. as the saying goes (i think) ...... "fatigue makes a coward out of all men." if the guy isn't in shape, i would expect him to have some trouble out of the gate.

Under normal circumstances, you cant go to a team out of shape and expect them to pick you up. You have to put your best foot forward. Which means, be in-shpae, and be ready to play. Chino got sent home last year for being out-of-shape, and he had been with DC for several years, I dont expect a trialist with no history with the team to get better treatment.

I was hoping for better news also. I thought i read in another thread that DC was hoping to sign somebody b4 the CCC? If so, there's no point in signing Odvan right now since hes out of shape and wont be able to contribute. And the Argentine apparently didn't impress either...

And Gomez came in out of shape last year as well.

There's a large difference between being fat (or excessively chubby if you want to be PC for Chino) and not being in game shape.

Ah. Sort of like the difference between being built for comfort not for speed?

true, i forgot about Gomez. Still, I would have to think this would hurt his chances. Do you think he can get in decent shape in a weeks time? so maybe by the end of the week he shows a glimpse of what we can realistically expect?

Maybe not in a week, but the language in Goff's article definitely lead to the impression that the team was ready to sign him already. The talent is obviously there, as indicated by his double digit caps for Brazil. I'm willing to take the chance that yesterday was just a bad day.

I'm with you on this one bro. Moreno, Esky and the rest of the front line is as sharp as German cutlery. They've been going hard close to six weeks now and a newbie (to MLS) stepping on the field for the first is going to get surprised some. I'm more interested on how quickly he reacts and deals with the situation.

I assume that he has not been playing for Fluminense in 2005 so he is bound to have some rust on his game if he has not played competitively since December 2004.

Some of the boyz on the Brazil boards said that Odvan was a Junior Baiano clone (physical, aggressive defender - not as much playing style flair as you typically relate to a Brazilain player).

Exactly. The best thing that comes out of this in terms of an indicator is how quickly he responds.

Like you said, Moreno and Esky are two of the better forwards in the league, and they're six weeks ahead of this guy. Combined with traveling, the language difference, and the simple fact that it takes time for a defender to get used to who he is playing with, Odvan had a lot to handle on his first day.

If it had been so bad that Nowak knew he wasn't going to make the team, he would be gone by now. Peter has never hesitated in pulling the plug on a trialist after a day.

I mean no offense in what I am about to write, so please take it as the hypothetical manner in which it is intended:

You write in the first paragraph, "from at least one person's perspective he did not fare well..." Is this you? Did you attend the practice, and are you reporting what you saw?

If it was not you, is it possible that you are being given misinformation? I've seen crazier things happen in the world of negotiation, trials, and scouting. It wouldn't be the first time that a certain version of performance was let leak that did not reflect the real situation when the amorphous world of MLS contracts was involved...

I guess that I'm saying that something odd about your post has stuck with me. I can't really put my finger on it, there is an unexplained vague quality to it that makes me pause. Again, no offense intended.

Cheers,
Tim

It seems to me after what Kevin said at the SE's General Membership Meeting this guy has some serious promise. They even said his first workout with the team despite the jetlag was pretty good. I think its an issue of perspective. Let's give the guy a couple more days, see if he pans out or not. Gomez was able to adjust pretty quickly, but like someone said, as a defender it takes a little more time. Patience grasshopper.
