How good was Robin Friday?

I am too young to have seen him play,or, come to that, have even of heard of him before he died in 1990.
i first heard about him thru a Philosophy Football shirt, and I know there is the book about him, "The greatest player you never saw" but did any one ever see him play? How good was he, and what happened?

he was self destructive, on drugs and an alcoholic. it's said he would've been great if he had more dedication.
