Has anyone here heard of this Colombian artist that is the premier latin artist of the last few years?
I saw him in concert this past Friday to a sold out Madison Square Garden. I had awesome seats and the show was OFF THE HOOK!

"A Dios Le Pido" is truly a great pop song.
Actually, the dude is quite talented, but he's marketed so much as a heartthrob (understandably) that it might actually stifle his career.

He is a good looking guy and at 33 years of age would probably do better to stay away from the heartthrob image. Having said that, I don't percieve him as exploiting the heartthrob image like other, less serious artists.
He does have a great sound. Great catchy tunes that make you enjoy his music. He sings about love and social issues, particularly Colombia's internal war.
Something awkward though is that I found myself dancing and singing out loud at his show but the lyrics are the type that puts a lump in your throat. Kinda like dancing to U2's 'Sunday Bloody Sunday'.
Colombia has been producing great artists in the latin rock genre in recent years that have done well abroad.

He did a show in DC recently, hence the press.
Depending on your music preference I would recommend him.

Carlos Vives? Come on! They may be good artists but of all of those I think the only too truly be a latin rock artist is Aterciopelados. They were pioneers of it until the girl became pregnant and left to be a solo artist. The rest are all pop performers except maybe Juanes who some people consider rock some donīt. I still think he is way way overrated. Some of his songs are awful and heīs becoming the artist that people who donīt listen to rock at all, listen to and then think he is hardcore. I liked him more in Ekhymosis.

OK I concede that Carlitos isn't exactly Latin Rock. But he still is a good artist eminating from Colombia to the international stage.
I only started to listen to Aterciopelados about six months ago and will likely see them in concert this Saturday in the Bronx. Latin rock hasn't been my forte, but I really enjoy the CD I have of them.
I'm not going to debate what is and isn't hardcore and who has the merits to be called 'hardcore' latin rock. Juanes has a very credible pedigree and his music from his last two works are, to me, awesome.
Overated? The accolades he's received aren't any coincidence and tell me how many latinos, of any genre, could sell-out the Garden? Very few.

He is a good artist. But heīs not even close to being latin rock.

They were one of the best latin rock bands and were one of the pioneers. The lead singer had a kid and thus all the songs were about the kid and stuff and he even released a solo album so we will have to see what theyīll do.

To me he us overrated. "A dios le pido" to me was alright not spectacular. "Mala gente" was pure crap and so is the song he release "volverte a ver". Thatīs my opinion and Iīm sticking with it. To me he is making more mainstream rock baladas and it will hurt him in the future.

I would agree with you. I don't believe he is exploiting the heartthrob angle. I believe that unfortunately is how latin pop stars are maketed here in the States. I say that's unfortunate because he is actually talented and it is a shame when someone of substance is wrapped in a bubble-gum wrapper.
I think Shakira is a good example. Actually, she is a talented artist, but because she was marketed as this sexpot, her crossover attempt was greeted with the exuberance of the flavor of the month. This is sad when she actually has talent to have more staying power. But, this is a problem in general with pop music.
Rafael is saying he is overrated when in reality I think he is only being overhyped. To deny his talent would be ignorant.

the only overated artists there are the mexican
for hardcore colombian artists try pescao vivo, mission vida, bacilos, etc...
overhyped overrated?
the guy produces all his own music he knows how to take a computer record a track, guitar, voice, and produce it all together and create a hit single by himself without a studio
good lord what next your gonna say pescao vivo isnt original?

Lots of good stuff here.
Shakira, very talented artist. I was a little disappointed by her latest effort in that she seems to be catering to the crossover crowd and losing her artistic edge in the process and losing concentration on her true fans. I think her next project will be telling. Will she continue in the "flavor of the month" mode or will she return to her early, artistic work (Piez Descalsos & Adonde Estan Los Ladrones)? I didn't think her crossover album was a total waste though but she'll lose me is she continues down the pop road.

They need to drop the sophisticated "rock" image because they arent.

I did check out the Aterciopelados show in the Bronx last night. They put on a good performance at one of the local colleges.
They performed a number songs from the new album in which Andrea expresses the joy on motherhood. I guess I can see why some core fans would be turned off to this, but as a new parent I can really relate.
I was a nice turnout, crowdwise. Andrea engaged the audience nicely and stayed atfterwards to sign autographs.
