The hell you do. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought United was just a comment on the team characteristic. Real, on the other hand, means royal (correct?), and those teams were annointed, blessed, or whatever by the King of Spain. Real Salt Lake sounds ridiculous. Who is the King of the Mormons again? And more importantly, does he speak Spanish or simply like that one Spanish word?
It's hard to count United as a team characteristic when the name was chosen before the team had any players. United and Real were both chosen because they were traditional soccer names.

I can't wait till rednecks start pronouncing it "reel" Salt Lake.
"Whut the hail?? Reel Salt Lake? Is there a fake salt lake around or sometn'?"
I'm quite sure that the majority of the USA, not just rednecks, will pronounce it "reel".
Back on topic I think the worst names are Club Deprotivo Chivas USA, Real Salt Lake, and that South American team called The Strongest.

I believe Welsh footie has some peachy names:
Connah's Quay Nomads
Newi Cefn Druids
And my personal all-time most hated name....
TNS
I hate this because they sold the name of the club. They used to be Llansantfraid FC, which is great. Its a proper name! It means things. But they sold it and became crappy TNS. That sucks so hard it blows!
I also hate teams selling the name of their grounds. The Fitness First Arena ... my arse! It's Dean Court and you know it! They are all twatty bastards and I hate them.

You beat me to it. Total Network Solutions Football Club is by far the worst team name. Real Salt Lake is a distant second.

Tampa Bay Mutiny at least has some sort of tie to the area, given the huge Gasparilla (pirate) parades that Tampa has several times a year. Real Salt Lake? Just makes no sense at all. And why is FC Dallas called that? It should be Dallas FC. Still better than "Burn" I suppose.

That is how it's ment to be pronounced.
Unless there is this huge unknown Spanish speaking population in Salt Lake City.
No, it's actually meant to be pronounced the Spanish way. Which only makes it worse.
Worst name of a team ever, still, is South Africa's "Dangerous Darkies." I mean....sheesh.
Runners up:
-New Orleans Shell Shockers (PDL)- sponsored by Shell Gas at least
-Central Florida Kraze (PDL again)
-West Virginia Chaos (PDL, last time I promise)
-Deportivo Wanka (Peru)
-New England (later Jacksonville) Tea Men (NASL)
-Football Kingz (Australian NSL)

Well, in Spanish, "Futbol Club" is used before the team name, hence FC Barcelona.
Maybe the're trying to be extra exotic by using Spanish grammar in their team.

But imagining a redneck pronouncing it is infinitely funnier.

In Germany it is the same way: FC Bayern München
