INJURED KANOUTE ON THE ROED TO RECOVERY - Sky
Frederic Kanoute has handed Glenn Roeder another fillip by declaring he will
be fit a fortnight ahead of schedule. The Frenchman suffered a thigh muscle
injury just four minutes into Saturday's thrilling 3-2 win at Chelsea and
missed the Worthington Cup win at Chesterfield. Upton Park Roeder claimed
after the game at the weekend that he expected the 25-year-old striker to be
out for up to five weeks. But further examinations have provided a positive
diagnosis, with the October 19 trip to Sunderland now a realistic
possibility.Hammers spokesman Peter Stewart said: "Freddie's injury isn't as
bad as first feared, so we're looking at the Sunderland game for his
return." This week has seen the good news flowing in for Roeder, with the
first victory of the season on Saturday followed by the Football
Association's decision not to charge Paolo di Canio over his goal
celebrations at Stamford Bridge. The Hammers also dodged the potential
bananaskin of Second Division Chesterfield in the Worthington Cup on Tuesday
night, sneaking through to the third round with a 5-4 penalties victory.

Como threaten West Ham's Vanoli hopes - tribalfootball.com - October 4, 2002
Como have stepped up talks with Paolo Vanoli's representatives. The former
Fiorentina left-back reportedly has a two-year contract offer on the table
from West Ham United and is also interesting Napoli. However, Como have
intensified negotiations over the past 48 hours, knowing that Vanoli favours
remaining in Italy this season.

Hammers boosted by Hutch return - teamTalk
West Ham midfielder Don Hutchison has handed boss Glenn Roeder a huge boost
by returning to training after a seven-month injury nightmare. The
32-year-old, who joined the Hammers in a £5m switch from Sunderland last
summer, has been out of action since rupturing knee ligaments in a 1-0 win
over Middlesbrough at Upton Park in February. But, after undergoing surgery
on the problem, the Scotland international has now been given the all clear
to return to training with an eye on a possible first-team return at the end
of October. He told the Daily Record: "I won't get too excited yet because I
need to test the knee out in a proper competitive situation first. But I am
feeling pretty good."

Pearce poised to return - teamtalk
Defender Ian Pearce will return to the West Ham squad for the visit of
Birmingham City this weekend after completing a one-match suspension.
Pearce was banned for Tuesday's Worthington Cup penalty shoot-out win at
Chesterfield after being given a straight red card in the recent 3-2 defeat
at the hands of London rivals Spurs. The stopper, who joined the Hammers in
a £2.3m move from Blackburn Rovers in September 1997, is now poised to
return for the clash with Steve Bruce's Blues but is likely to be forced to
settle for a place on the bench at best. Meanwhile, Hammers boss Glenn
Roeder has reported no new injury problems from the win over the Spireites,
and is likely to name an unchanged side against the Midlands outfit.

Lomas sets sights on Blues defeat - teamtalk
Steve Lomas has urged his West Ham team-mates to "maintain the high
standards" from the win at Chelsea in this weekend's clash with Birmingham.
The midfielder, who has recently returned from a shin injury, was delighted
with last Saturday's 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge, which earned the Hammers
their first win of the season. But, with the Irons still sitting at the
bottom of the Premiership, the Northern Ireland international is keen to see
Glenn Roeder's side continue their current form against Blues at Upton Park
on Saturday. He said: "Few people probably backed us to get a win at
Chelsea, but the way we came out and made a positive start showed just how
determined we were to take the three points. "It's been a difficult start
for us, but I'm very confident that we can push on from here. We have worked
hard on cutting out the individual mistakes that have been costing us and
the most encouraging thing about Saturday was that we took our chances and
are scoring goals again. "All the lads have been hurt and disappointed by
the start we've had - it affects everything, including your home life and
you're just not as happy as you would usually be. "When you're winning,
everything is rosy and you're a lot more relaxed." He added in the Newham
Recorder: "I know which I prefer, so that's just an extra incentive to make
sure we maintain the high standards from Saturday's win."

Dailly earns Scotland call - teamtalk
West Ham's Christian Dailly has been included in Berti Vogts' Scotland squad
to face Iceland in next week's European Championship qualifier. The
defender was criticised by the Scotland coach after the recent 2-2 draw in
the Faroe Islands but is named in the squad, while Birmingham's Paul Devlin,
Motherwell midfielder Jamie McFadden and Jackie McNamara of Celtic are also
called up. Hearts' Steven Pressley gets a recall to the squad after an
international absence of nearly two years and Callum Davidson of Leicester
and the uncapped Russell Anderson of Aberdeen also get the chance to
impress. Meanwhile, Vogts has insisted that a draw against Iceland in
Laugardalsvollur on Saturday October 12 would be by no means a disaster. He
said: "Maybe we need one point in Iceland. It is enough for us, for the
play-off place. "There is a very good atmosphere in the squad but we need a
good result. That is very important for us. "We had a very bad result
against the Faroes. The performance was so poor but we look forward and now
there is a very important game for Scotland."
Full Scotland squad: Neil Alexander (Cardiff City), Robert Douglas (Celtic),
Paul Gallacher (Dundee United), Graham Alexander (Preston North End),
Russell Anderson (Aberdeen), Christian Dailly (West Ham United), Callum
Davidson (Leicester City), Steven Pressley (Hearts), Maurice Ross (Rangers),
Robbie Stockdale (Middlesbrough), Lee Wilkie (Dundee), Paul Devlin
(Birmingham City), Barry Ferguson (Rangers), Scot Gemmill (Everton), Paul
Lambert (Celtic), James McFadden (Motherwell), Jackie McNamara (Celtic),
Dominic Matteo (Leeds), Gary Naysmith (Everton), Scott Severin (Hearts),
Gareth Williams (Nottingham Forest), Stephen Crawford (Dunfermline
Athletic), Scott Dobie (West Bromwich Albion), Allan Johnston
(Middlesbrough), Kevin Kyle (Sunderland), Steven Thompson (Dundee United).

GLENN: WHAT'S THE FUSS? - WHUFC
3 Oct 2002 09:59
Glenn Roeder says he is surprised that the argument between Paolo Di Canio
and Tomas Repka at Chesterfield on Tuesday night has attracted so much
comment in the media. The pair remonstrated with each other at the end of
normal time at Saltergate and, because there was still extra time to play
and the players were still out on the pitch, the arena for communication was
very public. Nonetheless, Glenn has been taken aback by the amount of column
inches devoted to the incident and says: "The other night Paolo and Tomas
were talking to each other in Italian and the problem they were talking
about got sorted out. "They are both big grown men and very experienced
players. I didn't see it as a problem and personally don't know what the
fuss is about. "I would rather people get involved in lively discussion than
sit down with their socks rolled down and their head in their hands.
"Whatever was said between them did the trick because the players stayed
fully focused and fully motivated right throughout the 30 minutes of extra
time. "I don't see any problems whatsoever, and in fact I would rather it be
that way, because it shows you a determination and desire to want to
achieve. "People talking to each other is part of life and certainly part of
a football club. If they weren't talking to each other that would be a
problem. "There is no need for this to grow any legs and carry on running,
it happens every day of the week - players talking about football!" As for
his thoughts on Paolo Di Canio 'escaping' censure from the FA for comments
allegedly made in the aftermath of the Chelsea game, Glenn says: "I wasn't
aware of anything untoward on Saturday, but Paul Aldridge has spoken to
people at the FA, and we will have a chat with Paolo - as we promised them
that we would."
