Can anyone tell me how he is doing in Russia  I really rated this guy but since he's gone to Spartak he seems to have dropped off the face of the earth. His career choice baffles me, he could've gone to La Liga or a number of top clubs and leagues. Very wierd to see an Argentine in such a climate and league as Russia.
Any guys who follow Russian league games, could you fill me in on this player?
Also Argentines: what do you make of Cavenaghi's move to Russia?

Been following the guy for at least 2 years up till the move to Russia. Although I do agree that is an unusual move, I dont think it is all tht bad of a choice. From what I know the Russian league is of pretty decent quality. Besides the climate, he will be able to be under the radar (For a change) and have a chance to acclimate himself to European football. Also I am under the impression that Russian clubs are recently forkiung out a good amount of dough.
Anyway, to answer your question, no idea how he is doing.

Like you I was following his career for a while before he went to Russia. The move has always baffled me. I can't ver recall an Argentinian player going to Russia. Cavenaghi could've gone 'anywhere' if Maxi can go Barca then C. had a much huger scope to pick and chose from. He's still only 23 right?

I always thought he was overrated. He's a slower, weaker, less skilled Maxi Lopez. Even when they were both at River Plate I could tell Lopez was going to be the one to shine, but for some reason Cavenaghi always got the publicity.

Probably because he scored most of the goals... you think?

I think it was not a good move at all by Cavenaghi to go to Russia. From what I hear he hasn't done very well at all there, and has mostly been sitting on the bench. :(

Actually he's still only 21. He's born September 21, 1983.

Oh, ok. Thought he was older than that. Are people still talking about him in Argentina? Also has he messed up his chances with the NT?

well, he's a different type of player - lopez is a flashy support striker type, cavenaghi is a cold-blooded #9 type

They are different players though. Cavenaghi is the goal scorer, Maxi isnt. I like you though think/thought Maxi would be the better one. Cavenaghi should be pretty good though.

Another one for the bump. Anyone have any idea what has happened with him now? Should we just forget about this guy or this any hope left?

A mid-table side will snap him up and make a mint when they sell him on. He's currently operating under the radar, but just wait until he moves to a better league. I've no doubt that Cavenaghi will make up for lost time.

Agreed. Hopefully the same for Clemente Rodriquez.

Is he still scoring goals or even playing for the team that has him? Any updates?

He's been stuggling mostly in Russia (scored only 6 goals so far this season, and has been in and out of the lineup all season long), but according to Spartak's new team President he is not going anywhere. Also, according to the interview published in today's Sport-Express (daily Russian sports newspaper), next season (season in Russia ends in 3 weeks) Spartak's game would be changed to accomodate Cavenaghi's style. Basically, they think they need 2 good speedy wingers in order for Cavenaghi to be effective. And that he can't fulfill his potential by playing in their current system. They already got one player from Zenit and probably would be upgrading their team in the off-season.
So basically, they count on Cavenaghi to be one of their leaders next season... and he won't be leaving Spartak, according to their president. Remember, Carvalho also struggled his first season in Russia
