So I didn't know this Kidz Bop (http://www.kidzbop.com/) existed until I saw a commercial for it on late night TV recently.
I was midly fascinated, especially after seeing some of the songs: http://www.musicspacekids.com/product.asp?beFreeSourceID=&catalog%5Fname=MusicSpace2&product%5Fid=MS9089
"Pieces of Me" and "Let's Get It Started" were expected, though I wondered if how many kids know the original title of the latter. But then I wasn't sure if some of the songs seemed a little, hmmm, grown up for kids (kidz?). The heartbreak and betrayal in "Leave (Get Out)" aren't exactly the sort of drama I experienced in my prepubescent years.
Though the best one in there is Modest Mouse's "Float On", as pointed out by Ultragrrrl (http://ultragrrrl.blogspot.com/2005/03/good-news-is-on-way-kidz-bop-is.html). Sample lyrics:
"I backed my car into a cop car the other day... YEAH!"
"A fake Jamacian took every last dime with that scam... YEAH!"
At this point, I'm beginning to suspect if they aren't really targetting kids. Especially with the late night commercials, are they actually targetting college kidz and/or stonerz? Seriously, can you imagine stoned off your ass and listening to children sing Maroon 5? This is the sort of thing my perpetually stoned hallmates would have bought if they saw the commercial.
