I really ought to look into Linux one day. I'd rather try it out on a spare machine and I don't currently have one of those.

7. Xemacs

I'm using Ubuntu right now (Hoary beta). I used Gentoo, but got tired of compiling Xorg, Gnome, etc. from source. Stick in a second hard drive, and installing Ubuntu was a breeze. It set up the dual-boot with no problem at all, with barely any user input.
Ubuntu setup and configured OpenOffice, Evolution, Synaptic, Firefox, Samba client (Windows Networking ability), CUPs (printing), etc. by default.

Does anyone here use Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/)? I downloaded it for my Mac (plus X11) and I really haven't had the time to mess around with it, but I like what I see so far. Really quick, nice interface. A whole set of panels and menus I have to get used to though.

I use Gimp and its awsome!
But yeah, its all a matter of getting used to the panels and menus. But just remember, it has basically every single tool that Photoshop has, just that they're placed very differently. And at a $0.00 price, it cannot be beat! ;)

Try a Linux Live CD, like Knoppix. It boots and runs from CD, automagically detects and configures hardware, and never touches the hard drive.

lame attempt at smart-@ss humor and general trolling.
You're not funny, just pathetic.
But hey, I took the bait, so congrats.
BTW - there are plenty of threads on MS products in the Technology board. Post there if you're such an MS fan. If your were being half way serious, I kinda pitty you, being that you are so loyal to company that has such outward hostility to you as their customer, and continually screws you over. I use MS products, when necessary. I was once a total MS loyalist because that's what I knew. Then I discovered there are superior, more affordable products, which are provided by companies, organizations, and individuals who actually want to earn your business. But hey, to each his/her own. :)
Let the Linux fans talk Linux. No need for pointless trolling.

The Gimp rocks. It does take a bit of getting used to compared to say, PhotoShop pro, but it works great. And the price is right! :)

4. RXVT (Smoothest terminal out there)
I love RXVT. It's super fast to load, and does the job beautifully. Konsole and Gnome-Terminal, by contrast, are slower to load because they have a bunch of features (preferences) and are bigger programs. But I don't need those features when in a terminal and working with the command line. So the super fast RXVT does the job perfectly.

No kidding aside, JeffS. Linux is the best thing that happened to tech industry to fight against MS monopoly. I was trying to say just that. Sorry that you interpreted the opposite way. Looking back at my post, I probably wasn't thinking too well when I posted it.

Yeah, I probably overreacted. I guess I'm used to a lot of the flame wars that go on in the tech world, where it's Linux vs Windows, Mac vs Windows, Linux vs Solaris, Gnome vs KDE, C++ vs Java vs .Net, etc etc etc ad nauseum.
Sorry I misinterpreted your intentions. :)
Anyway, if you do use Linux, do you have a top ten Linux apps? And what distro(s) do you use.
If you don't use Linux currently, and are curious, would like help/recomendations?
Peace.

I use gnome and tried only a few Linux apps at work. At home, I am still using MS shiat but I admit that they have gotten much better over the years.
I like Linux because we don't have to pay for it (and we shouldn't). Paying for OS is like buying a car and then pay extra to make it run.

Ya know, at work the other day my boss was complaining about linux. He claimed that he's never had to pay for microsoft windows whenever he purchased hardware (and we purchase seven figures worth of stuff a year) but whenever he needs to buy linux, he has to pay it and the support. What do you guys think?
Oh yeah and did anybody mention vncserver? I love using that app at work and then picking up where i left off when I go home (not that I enjoy working from home :( )
