As in, playing in the domestic CONCACAF leagues?
I don't think any current domestic CONCACAF player has a better pedigree than Eddie Pope.

carlos salcido or altamirano. altamirano has decent free kicks and is an attacking defender. salcido as a pure defender is better. i'm an america fan but carlos salcido is the best defender in concacaf.

Salcido is not the best. He isn't even close. Altamirano is one of the best. I think Joaquin Beltran of Pumas is the best. It's a joke that he isn't on the NT and el maza Rodriguez is.

I think Mexico does have some good defenders, thats what we need (Guatemala). Rafa Marquez is probaly the best, I also like that guy that plays for Chivas El Masa he seems solid most of the times. From Guatemala I only see Gustavo Cabrera and he still needs some improvement.

which club team does cabrera play for? El masa is good but not great. he mostly plays on the nt because of his size

Gustavo Cabrera plays for Comunicaciones in the Guatemalan League. He's improving I think he's the best defender we have. Chen is also good but he's coming back from an injury, Chen plays for Municipal.

El maza is garbage, absolute crap. I am not saying that just because he is a Chiva, if you actually watch Mex. soccer than you know what i am talking about.

Well I really dont watch Mexican soccer but from what I ve seen he looks to be a good defender and he has the size, in the game against Sweden you sure needed someone he's size and he did a good job.

Well he is bad, he can't head that well and when Mexico played those island teams he was getting burned by the semi pro players.

The question wasn't the best Spanish-speaking defender in CONCACAF -- broaden your horizons.

Rafita is good but he is not much of a stoper. He is more like a winger or something. I don't think anyone is better than Carlos Bocanegra or Eddie Pope. Maybe even Pablo Mastroeni (remember how he stoped Cuah at WC2002)

He is a stopper. In Barcelon he plays and a Defendinf midfielder and on the NT he usually plays central defender or sometimes on the left.

Yeah the US does have some good backs no doubt about it. I'd say Bocanegra is the best of them. Pope was pretty good back in the day though I thought he had his share of mental lapses. I don't know too much about him recently, but I heard from some US fans that he's declined.
Amoung the carribeans no one stands out much.
Guate has some decent defenders, better than some in the past I'd say.
For Los Ticos, Gilberto Martinez (i think it was, in the WC) played lights out in the last WC, he was as good a wide defender as I've ever seen from concacaf. Though he doesn't play in CR anymore does he. Brescia?
For Mexico, I'd agree about Salcido, he is rock solid at purely defending, attacking from the back he is less effective.
Altamirano is not really a good defender. He is out of position often and does not have great speed ala Roberto Carlos to get back to cover up for his forays up field. As far as shooting and free kicks though, he is one of the best in Concacaf easily. He's also very good at just generally adding to the attack with passing and positioning. Again though at purely defending he isn't all that.
Beltran, though he has his faults, is quite good and would have to be considered. (how ironic he can't get a whiff of the NT!! )
Ricardo Osorio from Cruz Azul will show in the future that he is one of the most talented backs from this region.
