Rinus Michels, the coach behind Ajax and the dutch national team in the early 70's and again the dutch team in 88 died earlier today at age 77.
Thanks for your great contributions to dutch and international football, Rinus!

What I always found interesting about him was how his career spaned generations-from those Ajax teams all the way into the 1990's. And at a time when football saw changes in style-no doubt, due to his innovations.
I guess the obvious debate is which of the Holland teams-'74 or '88-was the better. Was he ever quoted on which one was his favorite?

My personal opinion is that the WC74 team was much better than the Euro88
team. They just needed Marco Van Basten to be around 14 years eariler and they would have been WC winners in 1974.

Pity he had the wrong nationality
but one of the best managers ever and he'll be sorely missed.
Oeftie, I almost mentioned 1988 there.

He virtually on his own was responsible for professionalising Dutch football in the 1960s, and with the 1974 side he often complained about Dutch football still being rather amateurish. He said the players in the 1988 side were much more professional, in any case.
Anyway full respect to the manager of the 20th century.
