Only have time for 1:

- Arches
- Zion
- Bryce Canyon

Recommendations? Reason...

I'd prefer to minimize the hiking, but my wife would be thrilled to drag my sorry arse up and down a mountain then push me off a cliff.

Plan - Early Sunday afternoon, drive to hotel close to one of the attractions.
Monday explore
Monday mid-afternoon/late afternoon drive back to SLC
Tuesday morning fly out early in am.

I'd recommend Bryce...

Probably the easiest to get to time/distance wise...

IMO, the most unique scenery of the three...

You don't have to do a lot of hiking if you don't want to, but there are some decent trails that get you down into the canyon and back out again in a couple of hours (I'll post some pictures later if I can figure it out)...

The rim at Bryce sits at about 8000 feet...Moab is at 4000, St.George/Zion around 2800. My guess is that Byrce will be quite a bit cooler than the other two...how important you think that might be in early June is up to you :)

Anyone know how much match tickets will be, I'll have to use B'ham as a guess until then?

Also, how much is a cab from the airport to U of Utah?

Cheers.

Very roughly $20, not including tip. That's a guess based on when I used to take cabs to the airport.

But Rice Eccles Stadium is on a light rail line.

The same line goes back to downtown. Several of the downtown hotels have free shuttles to the airport.

Also, some hotels further away from downtown also are close to the light rail line.

Or, you could stay in one of the "International Center" hotels. The International Center hotels are in a big industrial park; so there is no nightlife. But they will be cheap on weekends, they should have free shuttles to the airport, and you can take the bus to the light rail station; then light rail to the stadium for $3.50 round trip (but supposedly, a fare increase is in the works.)

If you like golf, I might try the University of Utah Course. It's not great, but it's cheep and has spectacular view of the city.
.

Yeah, Utah is the place if you swing the Idiot Sticks.

Old Mill also has good views.

Mountain Dell is a bit of a drive, but you might have deer & moose in your gallery.

Wingpointe is a Links style course, if you hate hitting into trees. And you can walk to the airport terminal from the clubhouse if you have to catch a flight back.

Guys, Just saw that the Marriott within walking distance of the stadium and the light rail line has a 69 dollar a night deal if you pre-pay. www.marriott.com to book.

This one is a couple blocks away:

Not downtown, a few blocks from Light Rail, but the price might be a little better:

Far southern suburbs, but light rail is walkable:

Zion. Straight shot down I15, lots of very, very easy hiking, and scenary so spectacular it will make you want to weep.

Zion is like Yosemite only twice as good and a third as crowded.

Two and a half words:

Port O'Call.

Buy a temporary "private membership" for five dollars, then enjoy a regular bar experience with (1) non-3.2 beer, (2) mixed drinks with (gasp!) more than exactly one ounce of alcohol, (3) something like 5 bars scattered throughout a 0.5 acre, three story complex, (4) at least two live bands on seperate levels during the weekends and (5) some of the most georgeous, blonde haired, blue-eyed, all American twenty something year old girls you have ever seen.

How far is Moab from SLC? Wonder if I'll have a 5" travel mountain bike by then. Hmmmmm.......

How far is Fruita, CO from SLC? Supposedly Fruita is easier to ride using a singlespeed.

Fruita is just west of Grand Junction, and I think you're talking 5 hours from SLC if you take US 6 through Price. Moab is something like 4 hours away on the same route (up until you hit the junction off I-70 towards Arches).

Fear, you're still in Boise errrr Boise area, right?

I miss the Olympics... specifically the diplomatically immune beer I had at some of the "houses" that were set up for specific teams/nationalities. Had my "handful of Aass" at the Park City Library, among other stories.

Thing is, most of what I learned about Salt Lake City had a kid or two involved. That weekend, I'll be kid-free, and it's been a while since I've been there without a Timbers commitment or the "just passing through" issue, so I have to re-learn stuff.

So, if you're in a "downtown" hotel, you should be close to the light rail line?Expedia has an airfare + hotel thing for about $500 from DC with a room in the Holiday Inn downtown. That hotel is about 3 miles from the stadium - a bit far for the after game walk.

If it's a win, it feels like floating.

(Downtown is downhill from the stadium, BTW, but I didn't want to detract from the effect.)

In April.
Check out the 9/3 US v CR US Supporters Info Sticky thread at the top.

Alright, after a great experience cheering our boys on in Birmingham, and after finally deciding to go to Salt Lake for the Costa Rica qually rather than Chicago for the England friendly, I'm ready to book a trip to Salt Lake, but first a few questions:

If I'm planning on staying in the city with a Friday arrival and Monday mid-day departure, does Salt Lake City have enough to see in the city -- of course including the US-CR match and ample pre- and post-game partying -- to not rent a car?

If I stay in the city, what areas are recommended? By U of Utah? Temple area? I'm primarily looking for a hotel close to restaurants and bars/pubs and other US supporters, but am willing to walk to either for a better "bang for the buck".

Which hotel is preferred, Peery or Shilo and why?

Many people who've been to Salt Lake City tell me to rent a car and drive into the land for spectacular sights, like Bryce and the former Olympic training grounds. Is it really worth it, based on only staying for a long weekend, to really rent a car for this?

Aside from looking at travel-related Websites, which tourist and non-tourist attractions within or outside city limits (public transportation) our worth the while?

What are the best brewpubs or bars with the widest selection of beers on tap? (Priorities first :) )

Thanks in advance for whatever information you can give.

bostonbully - it seems that you can take public transportation to about 3 resorts from Salt Lake City, so I think you could do some stuff in the city on game day and then head to the hills on Sunday.
