Guatemala Population in 1990: 9,097,636 (July 1990)

The reason is the population growth since the mid 1980's and its rate has been the same ever since.

I got all the numbers from FIFA's site (where they have "Country Information") and just listed all the teams together for comparison. They don't have a unit for surface area, but I would guess square kilometers or something like that.

Where do you get "Mexico is twice as big as US?"

1,972,550 < 9,629,091

You're right about the last point. For some reason I was reading the USA number as 960,000 and thinking it made it half the size of MEX.

Congratulations to the CONCACAF teams in WCQ...they really raised their status in the most recent FIFA rankings:

Mexico - stayed at 6th, but is now there alone as Netherlands dropped to 7th

US - up 1 to tie for 10th

Costa Rica up 6 to 21st

Jamaica up 5 to 41st (well they're not in WCQ)

Honduras up 8 to 50th

Panama up 4 to 97th.

A pretty strong showing for the region. There were 10 teams in the current top 50 who improved their rankings and 4 of them were from CONCACAF.

HON is also eliminated of the WCQ, PAN should be at least in the top 70, anyway CocaCola FIFA Ranking SVCKS...

I agree with you....

Although it does consider many factors such as home/away matches, significance of the game, stronger/weaker opponent....

It doesn't consider which players are playing... a good example of this is the recent UNCAF tournament... or when star players are injured (Ruiz in the WCQ game in Costa Rica.)

another thing is that teams play within their own region (most of the time)....
I'm pretty damn sure that Hondouras(50) /Jamaica (41) maybe even Panama (97) can beat an asian team like Saudi arabia (30), yet according to FIFA/COLA they (HON or JAM etc...) are a weaker team.

I just don't think FIFA/COLA is an accurate measure of a country's progress
