I'm surprised people are tossing Gerrard over board today. The position he plays is thankless, and unless he does something spectacular, like against Olyp. in the CL group, he gets credit if they're winning blame if they are losing.

That's my point. He was great against Olympyakios. But how good are they? How was he against United and Chelsea this season? Or how about that wonderful back pass against France last year?

Remember, Rooney looked like raw sewage most games for Everton.yeah...lots of players that look like raw sewage get the call-up to play for england

as for gerrard...this conversation is pointless. you can't afford him.

Arf. Different formation. 4-3-3 would let him play with Makelele between them. Sven's not clever enough to try that, and Gerrard is tailor made for that.

As for Gerrard, I think one of the big problems he has is that he often feels he has to do everything, and when things don't go his way when he tries that, he fades from games. If he played alongside teammates that were better than what he has now (lets face it, man for man, barely any Liverpool player would start ahead any of the players form the top 3) I think you might see him do more in "big games".
That being said, I've soured a bit on Gerrard. He's not worth the ludicrous fees they're quoting, and if Liverpool get, say, Vicente and Rosicky in exchange for the giant pile of cash we'd be handing them, that's not a deal I like.
I'm starting to think either Ballack or Juninho Pernambucano (who's ridiculously underrated) might be better alternatives. And would be far cheaper.

Been rumored for a while that Real will go after Rosicky, and they'll most likely drive the price up for Gerrard... so for 35 million ..pool could get rid of Harry while adding Vicente and Ayala with change to spare.. that would be a monster improvement

Well, it was almost three years ago, back when he scored in the FA Youth Cup.

Ah, but if people recognize the limitations of the team, then yes he would be called up.

Rooney's early career was marked by occasional spots of brilliance, and long periods of complete anonymity where he didn't get the ball, and when he did...promptly lost it because he had absolutely no support and had to run at defenders all by himself.

And then there was that delightful period where Rooney was played as a left winger...

This is the kind of thing that makes me wonder..can't afford him?
Just how much do you think he is worth and why?

That would be horrific. I'd be really upset if that happened. Them getting two of the best players in the world plus a ton of change for one hugely over-rated one :(

Given the Benitez-Valencia connection, it could be a real possibility and the change(he'd get both for the lowest possible fee) used to buy a keeper, CB and probably even another player

That would be the makings of a very serious team.

Whether he says that he wants to go or not, you can't argue that his poor play hasn't had a role in his price tag being significantly cheaper now than it was at the beginning of the season.

Intentionally? Hard to believe...

Subconciously? More likely...

While selling Gerrard for 30-35 mil would free up a lot of transfer money, I'm doubtful whether Liverpool could handle the wage demands for Ayala or Vicente. If either were rumoured to be available, many top teams would pay close attention and Liverpool might be unable to get them anyway.
