This was a surprise result to some people because the French league is not supposed to be able to compete with the Spanish league but we here all know otherwise. Youssouf Hadji, who they signed from Bastia, this was his first game for the team and he showed why he's is supposed to be an important player for this team. Im sure his absence so far is part of the reason for the team's poor start. Erik Edman didnt play in this match either because he was with his wife who was giving birth.

OK, everybody knows the scoring of this first leg by now. Excellent goal by Frei, the Monterubio-Frei connection is back on track ! The good thing is the coverage Rennes is having through those European fixtures : they made the opening of CNN international's sporting news tonight. I'm happy for the club, so now they know what they have to do to get more recognition. :)

*whistle of admiration*

That's great. I wasn't that surprised by the result, it was the 4th of the french league against the 15th of the spanish league, to get a victory was quite logical.
But I don't know if that'll be enough when you look at Rennes' away results this year. I still predict a qualification though ...

I hope they won't wait too much before breaking the jinx this year. Managing this type of fixture is a little bit different, they know they have to score at least once, psychologically it's less tense, they can lose the match. Not by six goals though... :o

It's sometimes interesting for struggling teams to play in another context, we shall see.

Did somebody say six goals?

Again, we trash another ailing team but this time it was an away match. Looking at Rennes' position right now compared to last year and having broken that away game jinx already is a good perspective. Let see if the Rouges et Noirs have got rid of their demons in next fixtures. Anyway, the potential seems to be there even the same thing canbe said about the 3/4 of the Ligue... :D

Here is the group composition for Rennes in the UEFA cup. Hmm, not easy but anyway at this level one shouldn't expect it to be. Three out of the five teams make it to the knock-out stages, that would be a disappointment if Rennes was unable of doing so.

Groupe G :

VfB Stuttgart (GER)
PAOK FC (GRE)
FC Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR)
Stade Rennais FC (FRA)
AFC Rapid Bucuresti (ROU)

I somewhat feel reassured now, there's no way this slug passes through the strainer...

lol ! I should rep you for that one but I can't (too much ...)

And btw all the things the Strasbourg players could be compared to don't pass through the strainer neither, like sausages for example :

or even goats :

So I'm quite confident for that match ! :D
