My friend may be a little crazy, but so be it.
He created a website, http://worldcup.skipperstyle.com , to see if he could come up with donations to help him get to Germany in 2006 to see the US play.
So far he's doing ok, but he still has a ways to go.
The site now takes credit cards, so belonging to PayPal is not necessary. And it goes through PayPal so its perfectly safe.
But he is not asking for much, just 50 cents here, $1 here.
Appreciate your taking the time to check it out.
See you in Germany!

I think it's a very creative idea and solution. I wish I would have thought of it. I think a couple of years ago they did a story about someone who was doing the same to try and pay off their school loans. There was recently a story in one of the Chicago papers about a guy standing on the street asking for money to buy an engagement ring. I think I might even give him a $1 donation.

He is going to get a job this summer, but it will be tough to come up with all that money because he will be studying in Mexico for 6 weeks.
The point is to get money in the account and collect interest on it (2.41% per month, better than banks I think?).
The site now takes credit cards, even if PayPal does take a chunk of it in fees!

Boo hoo, make yourself a web page- nobody ever said if he didn't get the money he wasn't going. Which is why it is OPTIONAL. He IS going, donations or not.
It's amazing how some people react to something done for fun.

I was young once too. Guess what; I didn't get to go to the World Cup either.

You sure made it sound like he needs this money to go.
So basically this a fraud.

I would give if I had a reason to. I don't see anything wrong with asking, but he has to make a good case. Maybe an essay or something about how important it is to him or what he wants to learn or see while in Germany.
As for me, my annual bonus is financing my trip. :D (Should I duck?)

If you can't read, that's not our problem....
I didn't see "cancer" or "death: imminent" anywhere on the page...

This "friend" you speak of, is he um....You? THis sounds a lot like that time Mike Seaver had this "friend" who had a problem. I'm pretty sure Jason Seaver didn't just fork over the cash to solve that problem either, did he? They sat down and had a real heart to heart and Mike admitted that the friend was really himself.
Now look me in the eye and tell me the truth. Or you wont be able to move above the garage.
