Ugh.
I am trying to change my home network to Wireless G. I have a new desktop and a two-year-old laptop, both running XP Home. I bought a Linksys Broadband router and a wireless G card for my laptop. The desktop is getting the internet through the router fine, but my laptop can't get anything. The software for the card won't even load properly. I know it's not a hardware issue because I went out and bought a second card only to have the same problem.
Apparently part of the problem is that the drivers from my previous wireless card (a netgear MA401 card) are keeping my new one from installing completely. So, after reading up on this conflict, I went into safe mode to try and delete the drivers.
They won't delete. It claims they are needed to boot the computer. I have three wireless devices on there - the card I used to use, a USB adapter I used a few times and the new card which I tried to install. All of those drivers are on there, but I can't delete any of them. :(
I really want to resolve this. My previous setup was just for sharig the Internet, but now I want to go with file-sharing, etc. I also want to add my TiVo so I can transfer files to my desktop and burn them onto DVDs.
Any suggestions?

A few things I would try right off the bat are:
1) Update the BIOS for your laptop if you haven't done so yet. That may help.
2) Make sure you have all the latest updates from MicroSofts website. There may be some hardware updates to your laptop.
3) See if you can get a copy of XP Professional and install it right over XP Home Ed. It will upgrade it and mork much better than the home edition.

I need some help with these damn home networks as well.
I have a desktop and a laptop. I am running Windows XP home, i followed the auto set up to create a home network.
Now, on the Laptop i can access the shared files from the desktop. On the desktop I cannot access any files from the laptop.
When i look in my network places i can see the Desktop listed but not the laptop.
Any clues as to what i am doing wrong?

did you enable the option of file sharing on the laptop? if not, go to networking and set it up

Just double checked and it is all enabled. I even re did the network wizard thing and double checked what i did there.
When we try to access the Workgroup from the desktop, it says that this is password protected and i should contact the network administrator.
Perhaps you'd be better suited to sort it out by turning of the Inspiral Carpets, and setting down your stella?

When you log onto your laptop, do you log onto a domain or the local machine?

...Any suggestions?
are you installing the drivers from the cd? if so, try www.linksys.com/download/ - might work
i don't see why there would be a conflict as long as the net gear card isn't plugged into the pci slots. strange
if all fails...
do you have a back up point saved? you can try reverting to that point, if you have one.
you can reformat, but that might take long if you need to back up and reinstall programs and stuff

Hmm, does windows xp have a 'Device Manager', like windows 2000 does?
If so, I'd see if I could use that to uninstall the network drivers.

I'm not even sure im on a mac :p
I'm pretty sure it does though, it's a cosmetically enchanced version of win2k.

Get a regular ethernet hub, and see if you can see the shares over the wired network.
In general, setting up 802.11 networks is a pain in the ass. To further compound the problem, very few people turn on the most effective security features. Anyone with some computer savvy can crack your network and get your data.

Of course the great WinXP, the best Os in the universe, comes with Device Manager. Just right click on My Computer and then hit manage or Run -> compmgmt.msc to open Computer Management.

For 2 pcs just hook them with a crossover cable.
