I found this on the Daily Rotten:

Feb 16, 1978
"The first computer bulletin board system goes live on an S-100 motherboard and CP/M, and a Hayes 300 baud modem. Ward Christensen and Randy Seuss's Computerized Bulletin Board System still kinda runs to this day, but the Internet has taken the place that BBS's used to have. And this is why you have no social life, loser."

LOL... 300 baud, that takes me back. I think my first was a 9600 modem (blazing fast back in 1991). It all seems so slow to us, but then remember this was back when you didn't sit around downloading graphics or music (or pop-up ads). And if you were downloading programs, they weren't much bigger than 1 MB. Good old BBS days.

My first one was a 2400 baud modem.

I remember reading this one story about a janitor who started an adult BBS with a single phone line and 12 dirty pictures. Eventually it grew into a gigantic business and he was making well over 6 figures and was selling $99/year subscriptions to his BBS. I'm sure the advent of the WWW screwed that dude royally.
