Hey Nellie - Burnley are like the Metroscum, only with different accents and without the diving Guevara. DESTROY THEM!!!Travelling Eagles, Barra Brava and La Norte squads have never faced preparations like this at the Swamp, however: "Meetings between senior police officers and the two clubs have tried to ensure that Sunday's Cup match passes off without incident. There will be high-visibility patrols throughout Burnley comprising mounted police, dog handlers and special evidence-gathering teams with video cameras. "As long as that rivalry remains friendly and doesn't spill over into disorder then we have no problem with that," said Superintendent Neil Smith."
And here, in an article entitled "Burnley Aim to End 45 Years of Hurt" (http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,1563,1415435,00.html?gusrc=rss), is the rest of the story about the battle than Nelsen has now become part of.
Some day, 35 years from now, this will also be said of the MetroScum:D
As ordered by rebelzero, Nellie, DESTROY THEM!!

Nice. The announcer referred to Nelsen as 'the American'.

Nice. The announcer referred to Nelsen as 'the American'.
Along with Robbie (the tosser) Savage, Nelly was the best player on the pitch for either side. He clearly is comfortable and bossed the backline just like he did for DCU. Soon the Rovers will be singing "RY-AN, NEL-SON"

That was for Burnley's striker. Note that Friedel was in goal too, so there were two USA types in the starting XXII.

GMWhen I heard it, the context was his discussion of Nelsen not being used to a derby atmosphere. It was at that point he referred to Nelsen as 'the American'.
Plus, Brad's had enough experience in England that he would not be the subject of the derby remark.
And, there are no Americans listed on Burnley's roster. I just went to their site to check.

I think the poster meant Jemal Johnson, the Blackburn sub who entered the game for Dickov. The only slightly troubling aspect of Nelsen's play today was when he was one on one with a Burnley player permitted to go at full speed on the counter. Clearly, Burnley wanted to expose Nelsen's lack of pace, otherwise, he looked very solid and I remember only one service of his (other than clears out of pressure) that was really off the mark. What a steal we had last year when Nelsen was making only 90K on the last year of his contract.

Nelsen was outstanding today, again. As for his pace, I was doubtful about that too, until I saw the rest of Rover's back 4 run. Nelsen is Carl Lewis in comparison....
and, IMHO, the announcer was referring to Nelsen with his comment about the derby atmosphere.

Only to a Kiwi is being called "American" a compliment...
Just finished watching the replay. Great job by Ryan. He was beaten about three times, but other than that he was dominant. Distributed well, and if he could turn better he would've had a nice goal and become a hero by knocking out their bitter rivals.

he also called him the "New Zealnad captain"I didn't hear that one. But he definately called Nellie "the American". He also said that Jemal Johnson was from "New Jersey," but I don't think he meant our NJ did he? At any rate it was a solid game at the back for Ryan. It just shows how much we're going to miss him this season.
Thx,
Jay!

Yep, our New Jersey. I believe is father is a Brit and they moved to England when Johnson was 5.

Our beloved Ryan Nelsen, ever the toughman:
from yanksabroad.com match report-
During five minutes of added time, a Burnley supporter attempted to attack Blackburn’s Robbie Savage, but was intercepted first by New Zealand and former D.C. United defender Ryan Nelsen and then the Lancashire Constabulary.

Ryan positioned himself between Savage and the knuckle head that rushed the pitch. I remember when he jacked up one of the Richmond kickers after a cheap shot on ABMOD. Nelly's the man.

I had my English friend watch Nelsen during the match (he'd not seen him play). Nellie's play on the field impressed him, but what really registered with him was Nellie's stand-up behavior in protecting Savage.
That's our guy. When Ryan's done playing in what will be a fine career, I hope United finds some way to bring him in as part of the organization.

Yes, Ryan will always go into bat for a team mate. There's a photo on the net somewhere from a 2001 WCQ match in Wellington, NZ where he squared up to Australia's Danny Tiatto after the latter had executed a two-footed mid-shin tackle on (then) Manchester City club mate Kiwi Chris Killen. Tiatto, who had only been subbed on a few minutes previously, was shown a red card and was probably relieved to walk off before he got dealt to....

Ryan's long ball to Pedersen at the top fo Burnley's box was superb, it fell right at his feet. Sadly though Blackburn could do nothing with it.
I nearly lost it when Ryan had the chance to score. Anyhow, great game, nerve racking but great.

THis forum was a great idea because I certainly enjoy following the kiwi at Rovers. In my opinion, Ryan is one more important datapoint in the comparison of EPL to MLS. He not only holds his own, but stands out.
