For a class I am involved in at school we have been assigned a semester long project where we must develop or apply technology that will reduce or eliminate subjective decisions in soccer. It can not be a rule change. I am requesting your input on the following
What some of the most subjective call areas there are?
Any other input such as other boards I could visit to get info would be appreciated. Thanks everyone

I've always felt some sort of electronic tracking system attached to players' belts or something could be used to determine offsides, with sensors on the pitch that determine if a player is behind the defense or not. I'm not sure how workable that is, but offsides is definately the most frequently blown call in the game.
Or you could try Mel's idea, too.

Offsides is easily the hardest, most subjective call in the game (except when you have to call that diver, Rooney). An aerial camera or some laser could be fit in the stadium to mark the back line. Then you'd need a sonic sensor attuned to the exact frequency of a foot hitting a ball to record the position at the time the ball was delivered. Expensive? Not really. The networks here in America have down and distance generators for American football. Controversial and flying in the face of 100 years of "tradition"? Absolutely.
Tennis is thinking about using line sensors to determine whether the ball is in or out, not a subjective call at all, and they could still be 2 - 5 years away from some sort of implementation.

Agreed, one of the great things about football is the arguing when a ref calls a wrong decision. Without that, technology would completly take the passion and banter away.
Oh, and give the geordies a trophy, lord knows they deserve it, it's not like they are going to win anything soon...... ;) :D

a) No probs, do you know the Labour Club? Near the stadium. If you have your back to the stadium looking down the hill turn left. Go to the first right, walk down about 30 yards and it's on the left. Im always in there before the Newcastle match's.
b) Typical cheap northern geordie..... ;) :D

Cos it could be better and fairer. However, by far the hardest part of implementing such a system would be getting the system to know when the ball's been played forward. The difference between running with the ball, and playing it forward.
Goal line decisions are a piece of piss though - the hardest bit being introducing a sensor into the ball that doesn't affect its physical movement.

Thanks for the input people. For what it's worth, I see both sides of the argument. I agree it somewhat detracts from the integrity of the game, but at the same time, if you can make it more fair, without impacting the way the game is played, then why not? I dont really have a choice but to address the issue as it is a course required for my major. It isn't by choice I am undertaking a project that is so difficult. Thanks again for the input. If anyone posts after this but still wants to say something, I will be checking back for more input.

I think the only time video technology should be used in football. Is to see if the ball has crossed the goal line or not. Stopping every coupla minutes. Like they do in American football would be just silly. Simple as that man.
