It's MLSnet.com.....if history is any indication it will start working somewhere around the middle of the second round

It's only ten mintues after 11:00. I'm not sure this even qualifies as 'late' yet by MLS standards.

Abe Thompson was on Buzz' top ten.

The rest weren't. The first round pick wasn't in his top 36 of midfielders....

Aaron was 29 and Drew was 37 (doh!) of the defenders.

Hmmm....

I would guess there is always a difference of opinion...and at this level, these are players either on the fringe or below it. Good Luck

Judging by the talent that was drafted across the board, as well as just common sense, I think that the reserve league is going to be HUGE for MLS. I don't know that there was any earth-shaking talent picked up, but there was an awful ot of quality and potential. If there are five Jeff Parke types somewhere in that draft, not to mention a Damani Ralph or two, then I think the supplemental draft will be worth its weight in gold.

Actually, I think this system is going to be more about players like Ramon - giving them better competition so they can improve at a faster rate.

This is going to help the players who are Nos. 12-23 on the roster improve and stay in better shape. It ought to also help the match fitness of the players who aren't regular starters.

Don't get me wrong, it isn't going to remove the drop off between a starter and a bench player - but maybe make the jump a little smaller.

And that will be a big bonus for the league.

FYI, several years ago, Kevin Wilson was very highly regarded.

He was on the US youth national yeam that competed at the FIFA U17 World Championship in Egypt in 1997.

Among the other players on that team were Taylor Twellman, Marshall Leonard and Kyle Singer, all now with New England, ex-SMU star Luchi Gonzalez, now with Colorado, Dan Califf of the Galaxy and the mercurial Gus Kartes.

Wilson came off the bench in the 71st minute in a 4-0 loss to Oman – yes, we got trounced to Oman; we’ve come a long way in a short time! – played 82 minutes in a 3-0 loss to Brazil – and came on in the 68th minute in a 4-0 win over Australia. (Thanks, FIFA.com!)

Rather than go straight to college, Wilson tried to win a contract in Europe but didn’t and after two or three years he gave up and went to college, spending a year playing for former Burn player Chad Ashton at Univ. of Denver (where he played with Nat Borchers) before transferring to San Diego for his final three seasons. Thus explains why he’ll be a 25-year old rookie this summer.

Wilson was a defensive midfielder in college but I won’t be surprised if he’s used as a back with the reserve team.

Also, I agree with TerpFan that Thompson is a steal... provided he can stay healthy. In terms of skill, athleticism and tactical awareness, all the tools are there but, sadly, he breaks down more regularly than the 78 Dodge I had in college.

Drum'r Boy, I agree that one of the reserve league's main benefits will be match fitness and things like that, but you have to think that the primary goal is to have a bigger player pool. And not just for the sake of having more players on the roster. You don't pay guys salaries to sit on the sidelines; if that was the case, then it would be better to abolish the reserve league, cut rosters, and just let more guys play day in and day out in the A League. Why waste the money on players like Abe Thompson and Kevin Wilson if you don't think that there is at least a chance that they will contribute to the first team. I think the supp. draft is going to be a system for incorporating more high rish-high reward types than maybe the more polished players that go in the SuperDraft. Just my two cents.

I don't think that players 24-28 are useless - not by any means. And of course, developing the player pool is going to be important.

But those players are also necessary for the kind of depth in order to play reserve games in case you have an injury or otherwise use 14 players the night before.
