View Full Version : Chelsea's Best Buy in 2004

Got to watch the Blackburn - Chelsea game yesterday, and I was again impressed by Chelsea's form. They simply look like a top squad that is playing well. People may complain about the amount of money the club has spent bringing in players over the past two years, but with a couple notable exceptions, it has resulted very visibly on the pitch.
The two Blues that have impressed me most in the few games I've seen this season have been Arjen Robben and Petr Cech. Both have been huge. Robben's goal was nicely struck, and Cech was simply monstrous in net.
I started wondering - which summer 2004 buy was Chelsea's best? Robben has been great all season. Drogba leads the club with 11 goals. And Cech has probably been the best keeper in the Prem.
Personally, I'd say Cech. His play - and the questionably keeper play at Man U and Arsenal - has shown how important a great keeper is. Chelsea's defense is a big part of why they have given up so few goals, but they certainly would have conceeded more without Cech.

If we didn't buy Robben, he would have gone to ManUtd. He gets my vote.

You forgot the obvious, Chelsea's best buy this summer was Jose Mourinho.

I'd say Cech
Robben second
without Robben they werent letting in the goals but still grinding out like 1-0 wins
so he's just a bonus to get more goals
but Cech is a robot so he wins

It's a tough question to answer. Obviously Robben has been the key to the goal scoring (and the introduction of the 4-3-3) and while Cech has been amazing it is worth pointing out that the brilliant play of the defence does have lots to do with his record. Ferreira IMO has been great (I play fullback myself so I'm a bit biased :).
Overall, I think the answer to this is JM himeself because he has fostered the right attitude among the players (besides Joe Cole who can bugger himself) and as much as I like Claudio they never played anything close to this level of defence when he was in charge. The way Rovers tried to bully us yesterday is a perfect example of the effect that JM is having on the rest of the league and eventually we'll have that happen in a match with a ref who actually knows what the heck he's doing and we'll be up by two men with 45 minutes to play.

Without a DOUBT it's Paulo Ferreira. He shuts down the right side. He's the best right back in the leauge already. Robben has been great but I'll take a great defensive player over a great attacking one any day. (Maybe that's why I think John Terry is the best player in the EPL.)

with the number of goals JT has scored, some might dispute your theory

I agree with Eddie. Paulo has been an absolute rock on the right. He pushes up well in attack, keeps their left full defending, and hardly lets the opponents' winger get in a single cross. All in all, he is the ideal right back. As good as Robben is, we would still be winning 1-0 without him. Without Paulo, we sure as hell would be conceding a lot more than we are.

Best buy was without a doubt José Mourinho. The players would produce only 50% of what they do as a whole with other coach.
As up to players, Robben, Cech and Paulo Ferreira were major add-on's to the team!
