Is it true that Athletico's kit is based on that of Southampton, but that originally the team had hoped to acquire colours based on those of Blackburn Rovers?

No. Atletico Madrid's colors are based on Athletic Bilbao's. Atletico was formed by Athletic players/fans? in Madrid.
