Hi
I'm doing some research on teams that based their kit design/colours on those of another team...

eg Sparta Prague's dark red colour was inspired by the original Arsenal strip (which for one season only is being relaunched next season), in turn borrowed from Nottingham Forest. And Braga also play in a kit based on Arsenal's red and white design.
Leeds United chose their all white strip because Don Revie the manager hoped it would make them play like Real Madrid.
And Juve, famously, got their black and white shirts from Notts County.

Does anyone know of any other such examples from around the world (and even better have evidence to back them up?!) If so I'd be really interested to know about them.
Cheers guys,
Dan

From the February issue of World Soccer magazine:

"Athletic BIlbao were formed in 1901 from the merger of Bilbao FC, a team founded by English foundry workers from Sunderland, and another club, Athletic. The new club adopted the red-and-white-striped shirts of their hometown club, Sunderland. Atletico Madrid originally borrowed the red and white striped shirts from Ahletic Bilbao."

From the book ""Historia del Real Betis Balompie Vol 1" pages 48-49...

Betis got their colors from the UK supposedly Manuel Ramos Asension one of the early members of the Betis board of directors visited the UK in 1912 and during the trip he saw a British team with the green and white strips and another with green and black stripes so he bought enough of both colors for the entire team and that is how Betis got their colors. The green and black was worn a couple of times but the players liked the green and white and they remained through today the Betis colors. It contrary to popular legend has nothing to do with the green and white color of the Andalucian flag.

Pichi, that had to be Celtic Glasgow, and some Beti fans believe it to be the case.

Espanyol case is funny, though. According to a Don Balon article long ago which I remember, Espanyol originally wore yellow... but in those days, well... so they ran out of yellow kits and took what was available which is the actual blue and white.

My guess is Barcelona's "azulgrana" has something to do with its English origins, since there are many clubs using the light blue/dark red combo in England (W Ham, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Burnley?...)

As for Real Madrid IIRC the white came from an English team named Corinthians... I think it's on the website...

But they are wrong and as a Rangers supporter I will never believe that one even if Lopera tells me so! Just thinking about it makes me nauseous!

Too bad Pichi...

Celtic is THE green and white striped UK team... Not that I'm a Celtic fan, but have you seen English teams in green and white? In England they wear only red, blue, or white, or sky/claret... that's it.

I doubt they (Betis) used a Welsh or Northern Irish club as model...

That leaves Scotland...

oops... :p

Actually I am not sure about this one, but I think it is very well known where the red stripes in the white Sevilla jersey had their origins......in the blood from the opponent's strikers when they had to match up against Sevilla's defenders. :D

At first atletico Madrid took its colour from Bilbao, but these were blue&white, after a trip of Elorduy in Shoutampton they changed the blue to red and after this Bilbao took Atletico's colours... excuse my poor english
