31.01.2005 Striker Roque Santa Cruz is in mourning after the death of his brother Oscar Daniel in a road accident at home in Paraguay on Sunday. The 23 year-old was travelling back to the capital Ascuncion after a day trip with friends when the group's sports utility vehicle collided with a stationary bus. The accident also claimed the life of the SUV driver.
Roque learnt of his brother's untimely death in Munich. Bayern general manager Uli Hoeneß contacted the stricken player on Sunday to assure him of the club's full support. Coach Felix Magath immediately sent the player on compassionate leave, allowing Roque to start out for Paraguay at once.
The rest of the squad was informed of the situation in the dressing room after Sunday's fixture in Berlin. Roque's team-mates were visibly shaken by the terrible blow of fate dealt to their colleague's family. Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge offered the club's condolences to the grieving family. "FC Bayern Munich extends our deepest sympathy to the Santa Cruz family and everyone else affected. All our thoughts are with Roque and his family at this time."
